Don't expect connect plus

It should not say it comes with connect plus, if 90% of the time it doesn't. Connect plus is something that only the brand new rental books come with.

Worthless book. A book full of questions yet little to no solutions.
By Abram Q
Yeah, sure let's put in a bunch of questions into the book but not supply students with the solutions to the problem, and they have the audacity to charge us extra just to view the solutions? Furthermore, certain examples in the does not encompass certain questions in which the problems ask... useless hunk of junk.

Easy Read
By Tarah Godusky
I really like the way this text book is formatted, with examples and case studies. It is a fairly easy read, and has study questions after each section to check your understanding. The key points are noted in the side, which reinforces what the text is saying. I had to get this book for class, however, I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to teach themselves accounting.

Consumer Credit Models: Pricing, Profit and Portfolios, by Lyn C. Thomas

The use of credit scoring--the quantitative and statistical techniques to assess the credit risks involved in lending to consumers--has been one of the most successful if unsung applications of mathematics in business for the last fifty years. Now with lenders changing their objectives from minimising defaults to maximising profits, the saturation of the consumer credit market allowing borrowers to be more discriminating in their choice of which loans, mortgages and credit cards to use, and the Basel Accord banking regulations raising the profile of credit scoring within banks there are a number of challenges that require new models that use credit scores as inputs and extensions of the ideas in credit scoring. This book reviews the current methodology and measures used in credit scoring and then looks at the models that can be used to address these new challenges.

The first chapter describes what a credit score is and how a scorecard is built which gives credit scores and models how the score is used in the lending decision. The second chapter describes the different ways the quality of a scorecard can be measured and points out how some of these measure the discrimination of the score, some the probability prediction of the score, and some the categorical predictions that are made using the score.

The remaining three chapters address how to use risk and response scoring to model the new problems in consumer lending. Chapter three looks at models that assist in deciding how to vary the loan terms made to different potential borrowers depending on their individual characteristics. Risk based pricing is the most common approach being introduced. Chapter four describes how one can use Markov chains and survival analysis to model the dynamics of a borrower's repayment and ordering behavior. These models allow one to make decisions that maximize the profitability of the borrower to the lender and can be considered as part of a customer relationship management strategy. The last chapter looks at how the new banking regulations in the Basel Accord apply to consumer lending. It develops models that show how they will change the operating decisions used in consumer lending and how their need for stress testing requires the development of new models to assess the credit risk of portfolios of consumer loans rather than a models of the credit risks of individual loans.

Perfect Credit Scoring Book For Learning and Reference
By Limorkil
This book is the kind of book you need when you start in a particular field of business or have been there for a while and need to remind yourself why certain things are done in a certain way. The author starts out with first principles and builds on the basics to cover every application and all the key alternative approaches. This book is not just "This is What We Do", it is also "And Here is Why and How". Everything is explained using examples and case studies.

There are a lot of mathematical symbols decorating many of the pages but none of it is particularly advanced and the non-mathematician can follow it easy enough if she starts at the beginning. If you get lost and forget what f(x) and p(g|x) are meant to be then just look at the example and it is all ridiculously easy to follow when the author puts it in plain English.

The author does a great job of marrying theorems to business sense, so whether you are a statistics god heading one way or a business guru heading the other there is something for you here. The references are also top notch, so if you want more depth on something then the author usually points you to the definitive source. If you are only going to buy one book on the subject then you can do a lot worse than this one.

Quality book
By Dimitri Shvorob
It would have been helpful to survey the alternatives, and while I know that the (very nice) book by Raymond Anderson has a different style and is not a competitor, and the book by Naeem Siddiqi has uninspiring reviews, I cannot access the two books co-authored by Helen McNab. Steven Finlay's book looks solid, but largely "nested" by the combo of "Consumer credit models" and the 2002 book by Thomas, Edelman and Crook - which, I believe, jointly capture the domain knowledge available in book form.

The book's subtitle, "pricing, profit and portfolios", identifies its focus and its difference from, and complementarity to, the 2002 predecessor. Chapters 3-5 are new. Chapter 5 stands a little apart from the rest and discusses all matters Basel, so the book's core is Chapters 3 and 4. The 50-page-long Chapter 3 considers the one-period interest-rate-setting decision (focusing on take-up rate and adverse selection; there is some discussion of non-price incentives, but it is not worked out and quickly skips over conditional logit to talk about something LP). Chapter 4, with 70 pages, goes multi-period, bringing in Markov chains and survival analysis. (Curiously, pages 207-209 show an ostensibly dynamic model that actually has no state dynamics - shockingly, the decision rule turns out to be time-invariant. I group this slip-up with the many typos scattered across the book, and a tiny number of minor statistical misstatements).

The modeling on display may not always be immediately actionable, but it's always illuminating, and Lyn Thomas, in my opinion, is a really positive example of academic engagement with industry. His books, including this one, are the best thing on offer, and a must-see for practitioners in the area.

About the Author
Born Lancashire, England, J. P. Ashman is a Northern lad through and through. His parents love wildlife, history, fantasy and science fiction, and passed their passion on to him. They read to him from an early age and encouraged his imagination at every turn. His career may be in optics, as a manager/technician, but he loves to make time for writing and reading every day. Now living rurally in the Cotswolds with Wifey and their little Norse Goddess Freya, he's inspired daily by the views they have and the things they see, from the deer in the fields to the buzzards circling overhead. Writing is a huge part of his life and the medieval re-enactment background and tabletop gaming lend to it; when he's not writing the genre, he's either reading or playing it. He plans to keep writing, both within his current series, and those to come, whether short stories or epic tomes.

A Story Worthy of Epic
By Beester
I was a bit dismayed when starting Black Cross. The opening pages gave a lengthy list of characters and their descriptions. Ok, epic fantasy I get it but I tend to have GRRM cold sweat moments of needing index cards and a cork board until I can get everything under my belt and into my memory. So off I went into the wonderful world that Mr. Ashman has constructed. By page 50 or so I started to notice an itch at the back of my neck that something needed to happen. I thought about my motivation behind that, do I really need brain wrenching action right off the bat, to see violence or some other type of mayhem to enjoy a book from the beginning? I have read numerous works that never picked up but enjoyed them immensely such as The Iliad. Yeah, I know I really liked it but I have never in my life said I wasn't off center. :P)

By the time I had finished the book I was putting off reading more than a chapter at the time just so I could wake the next day a spend more time with the characters of the Black Cross that I have grown so fond of and now wait patiently for the next book/novella (hint hint wink wink Mr. Ashman). Black Cross doesn't really start off slow but there is a bit that needs to be introduced to get the various plot lines, yepper more than one, off and running. It gives the reader a chance to experience the characters in everyday nuances that for me only enriched my experience with each character. Mr. Ashman is weaving a web throughout the book that will end some plot lines and expand others that will continue on in the series. I stopped trying to guess a third of the way into the book and sat back, relaxed and kept reading.

The characters are well developed. I am not a fan of bringing out everything about a character right off or even throughout the entire book if it is the first book of a series. I want mystery, with hints of insight into their past and future. It leaves room for surprise and fulfillment. Ms. Ashman accomplishes this with all of the characters. Biv and Sears are my fav throughout the book. A Laurel and Hardy relationship to be sure but the play between them only heightens what you don’t know about them even though they make references from time to time alluding to the depth of their understanding of each other and their relationship. I also enjoyed the cockney accent given to the two characters reveling in sounding it out in my head. Told you before, I am off center. hehe.

The environment involves humans, elves, and dwarfs although you don’t get to meet any dwarfs in the first book. The diversity of the races along with the diversity within the races is pleasant. One would expect the same type of fantasy trope as you read along but there is some surprising elements of the humans that I haven’t read in fantasy before and a slight different angle on the elves as well. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book from environment, character development to the development of the plot lines and where they lead too. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a fantasy novel that will be a fresh aspect in many avenues from the typical tropes of fantasy that we know.

I also enjoyed, my opinion and assessment, the underlying messages delivered by Mr. Ashman’s writing. One person despite what meme’s and other philosophical bozos tell you can’t change the world. Statistically even that one person that looks to have change the world had help since birth to get to that point so yeah, one person can’t change the world. What the reader sees in the Black Cross is not that any person should set out to change the world but go forth and do what is right. If you are fortunate you may touch one life, one area or community in a way that will set things in motion to be just a bit better than they would have been otherwise. One of the MC sets things in motion but after that no one act of his makes or breaks the plot or the final goal. But what if that MC decided to not do the right thing to stand up and act? Would the final goal still been achieved? Possibly but we will not know that because that MC decided to act and not sit by and watch or just complain and do nothing. We all can learn something from that in the Black Cross. Doing the right thing should be its own reward and not the expectation of the positive consequence that may never come to fruition.

Buy the Black Cross, you will not be disappointed and more than likely will add a new favorite author to your list.

An epic fantasy novel you should definitely read...
By Shawn Wickersheim
The author creates an epic, richly-detailed and powerfully written fantasy novel. As others have pointed out, the novel has a more gently-paced start, but once the multiple storylines are up and running, the novel quickly kicks into high gear and does not disappoint. At times gritty and dark, especially during the intense fight scenes, the book isn't all gloom and doom with the darkness often offset by the humorous banter between two of the books most interesting characters. I think fans of Mark Lawrence, Joe Abercrombie or David Gemmell will enjoy this book.

More of the Same
By C. Gardner
The "I love him but I can't trust him" has gotten pretty old by this book in the series, with not enough new to justify buying the book or its successors.

Dante rocks!
By Jessica S.
Saint City Sinners rocked! Dante and the gang return to her home city to help Gabe with a case that hit close to home that ends up leaving Dante shattered for it doesn't stop with the one death. People very close to Dante die.

Things between her and Japh don't get any better either, even though he fought the devil to save her. For Dante is set on protecting Eve from Japh and he is trying to bring her back to hell. He also continues to leave Dante in the dark about important things. Like the mysterious treasure and its Key.

Everything goes straight to hell after that, for one night Dante wakes up and finds him gone, she continues to work on Gabe's case and tries to put Japh out of mind. But then things get really bad, a sedayeen and a shaman need protecting for Eddie had been working a cure for a horrid drug that many people wanted for themselves or to destroy it. Dante is up to her neck in problems and hellhounds, then Eve comes to her and asks her to join her in her rebellion against Lucifer.

Everything leads up to the cliff hanger ending where Dante makes several decisions that include the murderer, Japh and much much more. This was a helluva good read! Sorry if the review is not explict about the plot, a lot happened and I don't want to give away any of the good stuff.

God Awful
By Zerlina
I loved the first two books in the series. So much so that as soon as I could I ran out and bought all the rest of the books in the series. I read the third and found myself not only bored and annoyed by her whining, complaining and general 7year old behavior I was appalled by the blatant way that the men in the book just suddenly took to disregarding her. Now to be fair it could be because she was so immature about everything.

It took me a while before I could bring myself to pick up book number 4 and god not only have I put it aside several times in favor of other things but still I hate to leave any book unfinished and tried yet again.

I am disturbed by the way she cringes from the Japh's every move afraid that once again he's going to hurt her. Its way too battered wife syndrome for my taste. What started as a great series has turned into a whine fest with domestic violence thrown in for the heck of it.

Wish i could give it no stars but it wont let me rate that low. heck i'd give negative stars if i could.

Review
"The 6th edition of Schalm's Veterinary Hematology is a comprehensive textbook that primarily targets veterinary clinical pathologists, pathology residents, and staff within veterinary diagnostic laboratories. It is also a valuable reference for internists, specialists in laboratory animal and wildlife medicine, and graduate students, but is unlikely to be used as a standard textbook for a clinical pathology course in veterinary schools because of its size and cost." (Veterinary Clinical Pathology, 2011)

"In the sixth edition of the classic Schalm's Veterinary Hematology, the editors have achieved their stated goal of making the extensive amount of information that is provided accessible, cohesive, and readable. Numerous contributing authors have lent their expertise to provide excellent in-depth coverage of topics. Outlines at the beginning of each chapter and cross references among chapters are extremely useful to readers." (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, December 2010)"The sixth updated edition of Schalm's Veterinary Hematology is a 'must' for any vet's library. It's been extensively revised and reorganized for better accessibility, grouping topics within disciplines and packing in over 550 images along with new sections on lab techniques and toxicity. Expanded sections on species-specific hematology and new photos and discussions make this far more than a casual update, and a 'must-have' bible of facts no vet or college-level reference collection should be without!" (The Midwest Book Review, October 2010)

"Arriving 10 years after the previous edition, this is a welcome update and expansion of the book that has long been considered the ultimate reference for veterinary hematology. This remains an excellent reference for the field, unparalleled in scope and depth. Though greatly expanded and reorganized, the new edition is more accessible and easier to read than previous editions." (Doody's, September 2010)

Close to perfect but no cigar
By A Customer
While this text is a valuable resource for students, veterinarians, and veterinary clinical pathologists, the wealth of information and quality is diminished by the numerous grammatical and typographical errors found throughout the text. Some errors can be overlooked; however, others can result in misinterpretation of laboratory findings by the novice. It would behoove the editors to spend more time on editing in future volumes.
Examples: p. 1231 Oct. vs. May RBC #, Hb, And Hct. values do not make sense.
p. 699, table 104.2 myelomonocytic leukemia, special stains, positive NSE with and without fluoride inhibition is incorrect
p. 955, The author states: "Interestingly, the diseases causing hemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phopsphate dehydrogenase deficiencies common in human patients have not been documented in domestic animals." yet, on p.996, he lists a domestic animal! [Table 145.1 Defects: glucose-6-phopsphate dehydrogenase deficiency; Breed: Weimeraner]

SIXTH EDITION ! !
By Marvin H. Mccain
Please note that this is the sixth edition, published in 2010. Negative comments of other reviewers are based on the FIFTH edition, published in 2001. The SIXTH edition has two new editors, all new contributors, new data and chapters. Do not be misled by comments and reviews of the older edition.

Best Veterinary Hematology book/reference
By Harris T.
TheFifth Edition of Schalm's Veterinary Hematology is a valuable tool to anyveterinarian, regardless of which point they are in in their career. For the novice veterinary student, thein-depth chapters provide the necessary information to easily learn newconcepts. The color photographs, illustrations, figures and charts drivehome the salient points. The casestudies put the topics into a clinical setting allowing the student to applythe information learned in clinical setting. The figures and tables provide the practicing veterinarian enoughinformation to jar a rusty memory. Thein-depth chapters also provide the seasoned veterinary with the necessaryinformation to stay abreast of the latest trends. The variety of species-specific hematologic information isunmatched by any other book that I have used in my short career. The topics are organized in a coherent andlogical manner. The index is quiteextensive and makes locating the needed information quite easy. I wish a resource like this had been available 2.5 years ago when I started veterinary school. It would have saved me alot of time having to look in multiple texts to find information that could all be found in one place.
