This Book Saved Me from the Siren Song of the 60's
By Mona Clee
Isn't that an odd thing to say about a book whose title starts with the word "sex?"

Well, around 1964 one of my parents brought this book home, although neither of them would ever confess to the deed. Whoever it was, they did me a big favor. When the folks weren't watching, I swiped the book and devoured it in a single long sitting.

Helen Gurley Brown should have entitled this masterwork "All the Hard-Nosed Things that Young Women in the So-Called Pre-Feminist Era Need to Know about Money, Career, Independence, Women's Rights, and The Way Things Unfortunately Are. And Oh Yes, Sex. That." However, the book would undoubtedly have sold fewer copies if the title had truly reflected the contents, so it's just as well they hyped the sex part.

Under the impression that I was going to get to read some really naughty stuff, I studied Brown's book with the intensity I would later reserve for pre-calculus. Brown was the friendly, more experienced adult ("Aunt Helen," I liked to think of her) who cut the BS and told you how it really was with respect to a number of important subjects, often contradicting the messages of the dominant 60's culture, as it materialized later in the decade.

Money? Girl, Woodstock or not, you will need it when you are no longer "pristinely young," so get a career and earn it. You will appreciate the freedom and self-respect it brings you. Do the very best you can with whatever abilities you have and the education you can get, and the rewards will carry you through the inevitable bad times that everybody faces. Beauty? Even if you are gorgeous, don't put all your eggs in that basket, because your beauty will fade, and then where will you be if that's the only card you ever played? Love? It is NOT all you need, no matter what the Beatles say. Marriage? Fine, fabulous (Brown herself has been married over forty years), but don't pin all your reasons for living - or your financial survival -- on a guy. Guys are just fallible human beings. Don't give up your ability to stand on your own two feet when you fall in love, because there are no guarantees in life, ever. As Brown eloquently put it, in middle age (or at any time before) a man can leave a woman "like dishes in the sink" if he wants to badly enough. Exercise and a healthy diet? Essential to self-respect. Property ownership (or at least having a fine apartment)? Also essential, particularly when you get older; living in a garage apartment furnished with orange crates is cute when you're twenty, but pathetic when you're forty.

I came of age in the late 60's and early 70's, when the culture was telling us to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Don't conform, don't join the establishment, don't become the man or the woman in the gray flannel suit, don't throw away your life working and forget to smell the roses. Follow your dreams and the universe will magically provide.

This was good advice as far as it went. It sounded so great, and it really was well meant and idealistic and heartfelt...if only it had been true. Unfortunately, it should have been taken with a small but healthy dose of skepticism. Such as, yes, do follow your dreams, but along the way learn some marketable skills, okay? However, the cultural mindset discouraged us from planning for the future, or thinking seriously about money, financial issues, and practical things. We might have known with our minds that the Woodstock generation would eventually get much, much older, but we didn't believe it.

I, however, had Aunt Helen whispering in my ear, so around age thirty I finally rolled up my sleeves, quit hanging out in Austin drinking dark beer and swimming in Barton Springs, and got an advanced degree and a good job -- but did plan things so I still had some time to smell the roses. I couldn't have done it without her advice. At the end of the day, although Brown was not considered a "real" feminist, and in fact came in for a great deal of scorn on that account, she helped me every bit as much as the rest of them.

She wasn't into rhetoric, ideology, or internecine wars with the sisters, she just gave good hardheaded advice about the way things were, like it or not, that's city hall so just deal with it. She liked men. They were people, they had their problems, but generally they were pretty nice. This was quite a relief to those of us who liked them too, even though there were times when it wasn't politically correct to dwell on it. She just didn't believe that liking men required her to give up everything else worthwhile in life, or her ability to provide for herself.

Yeah yeah, like just about everybody else I take issue with her rather Darwinian attitude about carrying on with married men. However, as the writer Molly Ivins would say, she had the guts to tell young women how the cow ate the cabbage. I honor her for that.

Life changing event
By C. Fey
I bought this book recently just because it is the book I that changed my life. I read it originally when it was first published. I was a recent high school graduate in a steel town culture in Western Pennsylvania. I read it and my whole approach to life changed. I went to collage (first one in my family), became successful in the technology world (only one in my family), ended up in New York city (well I regard this as a benefit). None of these things (as well as all the side effects that came with them) would have happened if I had not read this book. I don't know if it would have that impact on today's teenagers, but I bought it again in 2014 on the occasion of my retirement to see what it could have said to trigger all these events.

a bit dated....
By cindy eley
a bit dated, but entertaining view into the world of women (mad men style) back in the 60's, 70's. surprisingly accurate advice back then about healthy eating and nutrition--that has been since confirmed by science and 50 years of experience.

I wanted to like this but I was disappointed
By RN Student
I really question the other reviews. I wanted to like this but I was disappointed. The questions overall were fine but there were many mistakes and whoever proofed it did a poor job. The worst part was the rationale. They told you the correct answer but often did not tell you anything about why the others where incorrect. I understand the price is a deal but you get what you pay for.
If the publisher reads this, here are a few thought. I believe it was question 88 where the answer given and the rationale were not matching. In the answers, half the time the question will tell you it is a select all but then it often would not. Lastly, I would have to look back but somewhere around question 20 there is a duplicate question or at least very similar talking and what gives the right to delegate duties.

Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains, by Sam Weinman

An engaging, inspiring exploration of the surprising value of setbacks—and how we can use them to succeed

As an award-winning sports journalist, Sam Weinman has long studied the ripple effects of losing. But as a father of two competitive boys, he struggled to convince them that failing—whether losing a hockey game or bombing a math test—can actually be a critical part of success. So he sought out the perspectives of men and women who have turned significant setbacks into meaningful comebacks—and sometimes even new careers—to illustrate how we can not only overcome defeat but grow stronger from the experience.

Blending firsthand interviews and advice from professional athletes, business executives, politicians, and Hollywood stars with expert analysis from leading psychologists and coaches, Win at Losing reveals how renowned figures—from Emmy Award–winning actress Susan Lucci to golfer Greg Norman and politician Michael Dukakis—have prevailed and even triumphed in the aftermath of loss, humiliation, and rejection. In showcasing the ways our most difficult moments can be turned into powerful growth opportunities, this lively and moving guide asks readers to redefine what constitutes success and failure, and offers an essential blueprint for harnessing the power of setbacks to achieve what we want in life.

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling,

but in rising every time we fall.

—OLIVER GOLDSMITH

The most important sporting event I ever attended was a kids’ tennis match on an August afternoon. This might seem odd coming from a sportswriter who has covered World Series and Stanley Cup Finals and dozens ofmajor golf championships. But none of those events involved my kid. And none led me down this curious road of talking to everyone from professional athletes to CEOs to presidential candidates about their most crushing defeats. That’s the road that led me here.

But first there was a tennis match on a quiet late-summer day. There was no press. There were only a handful of spectators. And the only real drama came at the end when my oldest son essentially lost it.

I should explain: Charlie is a pretty good tennis player. Approaching eleven, he has everything down—the two-handed backhand, the open-stance forehand, the emphatic little grunt with every stroke. Charlie couldn’t tell you the reason one grunts when playing tennis. But he knows that Rafael Nadal grunts, so the conversation endsthere.

This is how it usually works with him. About a year ago, Charlie talked us into getting him a blue Nike headband like the one Nadal wears, and now whenever he misplaces it, he reacts as if he’s missing a kidney. “Where’s my headband?” he’ll ask before a match, tearing frantically through the house. “I can’t play without myheadband!”

Over the courseof that summer, as Charlie would punctuate forehand winners with Nadal uppercuts, the other kids around the tennis court took to calling him Rafa. Charlie ate it up—so much, in fact, that if in mixed company I dared to call him anything else, I might as well have announced he still wet the bed.

  “Rafa,” he’d correct me.

  “Right,” I’d say.“Sorry.”

When it came time for our club’s junior tournament, Charlie progressed through the early portionof the ten-and-under bracket with enough ease that he began thinking ahead to the final. We both did, actually, although outwardly I was saying all the right“dad” things: Respect your opponent; one match at a time; it’s important to just have fun. In the semifinal, when he matched up against a timid, freckly kid named Jake, Charlie bounced onto the court confidently, perhaps thinkingthat if he wrapped up the win with enough time to spare, he could sneak in a swim and a candy bar before dinner. Seated on the deck overlooking the tennis courts, my wife, Lisa, and I made small talk with Jake’s mom and feigned indifference through the first part of the match. Oh, are they keeping score? How cute! We anticipated a short match.

But as play unfolded, nothing went right. Charlie placed backhands into the corner, and Jake hunted them down, sometimes even passing Charlie with a winner of his own. Serving, never a strength for my son, was now an ordeal, with Charlie at onepoint forfeiting an entire game by sending eight consecutive balls into thenet. On the deck, Lisa continued to indulge Jake’s mom in conversation, but I couldn’t hear them anymore. I was entranced. As I watched my son, I could seehis anxiety level rise—the hurried tosses, the twitchy fiddling with his racket, the occasional look heavenward when he sailed another shot long, as if God had suddenly taken interest in a ten-year-old’s tennis match and was siding squarely with Jake.

By the final game, Charlie was flat-footed and waving passively at the ball. On the final point his forehand bounced before the net and onto Jake’s side, and Jake briefly weighed whether he should play it. It didn’t matter; the match was over intwenty minutes. Charlie lost 6–1.

When Jake approached the net with his hand extended, Charlie shuffled forward to weakly reciprocate, looking past his opponent the whole time. Then he tore off his headband, flung his racket at my feet as I approached, and ran toward theparking lot.

“Charlie!” I hissed in a sort of scream-whisper, the same type of urgent yet polite tone you might use to ask someone to fetch you a roll of toilet paper. “Come back!”

Charlie turned toward me, his face streaked with tears.

“I’m never playing tennis again!” he said. “That’s it!”

“That’s it?” I said. “You’re retiring? Will there be a press conference?”

“Stop, Dad,” hesaid. “It’s not funny.”

It went on like that for a little while, Charlie swearing off tennis, me summoning some of mybest “It’s only a game—you’ll learn from this” material. Though I still hadn’t talked him out of retirement, I eventually convinced him to gather his racket and head to the car while I went to find Lisa, who had said good-bye to Jake and his mom and was now waiting for me under the awning by the tennis court. Lisa and I have been married for fifteen years and have been friends since the fifth grade. She knows all my looks, and I know most of hers, and as I walked toward her, she offered a faint smile in the “What have wegotten ourselves into?” vein. Then she finally spoke.

“My God,” she said. “He’s you.”

So this book began with a tennis match. In watching Charlie unravel over something so insignificant, I started to think about howlearning to lose is an acquired skill, like juggling or parallel parking. It contradicts our most basic nature because everything in our DNA has taught us to want to win and hate to lose. After all, at one point in our history, winning was about more than tennis matches. It was about securing food and shelter and not letting the neighborhood pack of wolves make off with one ofyour kids. You’ve heard that Vince Lombardi line “Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” The context was football, but for a great portion of human existence, it could have been describing the simple struggle to survive.

Now, though, we lose and usually live to tell about it. We lose in sports, and we lose in ourcareers, and we lose out on that house with the perfect backyard we were certain we were going to get. Some of us are losing our hair, although we’dprefer not to talk about that. Over the course of any given year, we probably lose a thousand different ways, and as painful and inconvenient as those losses might be, we still have a say in how we handle them. We too often overlook that last part.

This is a truth I’ve come to appreciate not only as a father of two sports-mad boys but also as someone who’s had his own frequent dalliances with failure. My wife’s contention that Charlie in the teary aftermath of his tennis match is a miniature version of me is true, but only to an extent. I still struggle with losing in its various forms: in men’s league hockey games, in golf matches for fivedollars, and as an editor when I see the competition come up with a story we don’t have. My authority in writing this book does not stem from the graceful and admirable ways I’ve lost in my life but rather the opposite. I’ve thrown my racket and slammed my fist on my desk, and on one occasion I slung my varsity jacket into a puddle of mud after a bad pass cost my high school hockey team our season. Once, stuck in a newspaper job, I was awaiting word about a plum job I was on the short list for getting. It was my birthday, and Lisa and I were headed out the door for dinner. When the email came that the job went to someone else, I sat down at our kitchen table and cried.

The difference now is I also see that losing can serve in ways winning never can. Losing hastaught me and toughened me and forced me to address the very shortcomings that got me in trouble in the first place. That bad pass I made at the end of my junior year in high school inspired me to get stronger and fitter, and it led to a senior year in which I emerged a different player. That plum job I didn’t get was inspiration to develop the skills that led to an even better opportunity later.

Looking outside myself, I’ve also come to realize that the people I’m most impressed by are notthe ones who appear to float through life but those whose weaknesses and failures are exposed in all sorts of undignified ways and yet they emerge stronger as a result: golfers who’ve blown tournaments, politicians who’ve botched elections, the bookstore owner who has struggled to pay his bills for decades and has only recently begun to turn a profit. What I’ve found is that the people who’ve approached their failures honestly and constructively are often able to point to tangible benefits of those losses. The impact of this can be profound: The more we can embrace the upside of losing, the healthier our perspective toward whatever is in front of us, the less encumbered we are by fear.

Although my interest in how we handle losing began with a personal challenge, I saw it as a challenge that permeated every segment of our society. And it was in recognizing the thread between my family’s modest struggles and the bigger, bolder storiesthat exist elsewhere that I decided to dive in headfirst. I sought out Olympians and politicians, entertainers and Internet startup CEOs. Their versions of losing vary—lost games, failed political campaigns, businesses and careers dissolved in flames—and may seem unrelated at first glance. But there are similarities as well, and it was upon consulting a wide swath of experts that I learned there is not only an art to losing but a great deal of science, too. I saw there is a way to not only tolerate setbacks but also use them as a foundation for future success—to win, if you will, at losing.

I’d love to tell you I contemplated all this while driving away from the tennis courts that day, but more likely I was thinking about dinner and whether I needed to stop for beer. But the image of Charlie’s frustration lingered. I had taught my son a forehand and a backhand, and he knew exactly where to stand when receiving at 30–15. Yet there was still much for both of us to learn about coping with theswirling emotions that come with defeat.

No one sets out to be a good loser, in the same way thatno one sets out to be an ex-husband. I used to think of losing as one would curing a hangover or avoiding prosecution: If you’ve achieved a level of proficiency at it, you probably ought to consider what that says.

You may recall Super Bowl 50, when the Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers, and Carolina’s star quarterback, Cam Newton, was so despondent he walked out of his postgame press conference. The next day he explained his reasoning, “Show me agood loser and I’ll show you a loser.”

I’ve come to abhor that sentiment to the point that I now think being a good loser is exactly what we should aspire to be. Being a good loser does not denote some hapless resignation. It implies perspective and resilience and the quiet confidencethat the world will not crumble around you just because of a fleeting setback.

There are all kinds of stories about athletes whose abundant desire to win carried over to the most mundane tasks. At airports, Michael Jordan would bet his teammates whose bag would shoot out of the carousel first. Jordan was said to revel in winning, less because he needed to prove his baggage claim prowess and more because, like Cam Newton, he didn’t want any more experience with losing than he absolutely needed.

Trivial as it sounds, Jordan was doing himself a disservice. There is in fact merit to this sort of experience, and he should know. As a high school sophomore, Jordan was famously cut from the varsity basketball team, and he channeled that disappointment into a competitive fire that burned for decades. Later, when his Chicago Bulls stumbled in the playoffs each spring against the more experienced Detroit Pistons, Jordan used the lessons from those losses to help transform the Bulls into a dynasty.

The Bulls would win six NBA championships over the next eight years, and Jordan, who also won an NCAA title and two Olympic gold medals, would become known as the consummate winner in basketball, if not all of sports. But success brought complications as well, many of which persisted into retirement. Jordan became so obsessed with winning and so uneasy with losing that he struggled to find a comparable outlet now that he had hit middle age and was incapable of replicating the same level of success he had as a player. The writer Wright Thompson had rare access to Jordan and his inner circle for a 2014 profile in ESPN the Magazine, and he depicted the basketball legend in the years following his retirement asunfulfilled and restless.

“There’s no way to measure these things, but there’s a strong case to be made that Jordan is the most intense competitor on the planet. He’s in the conversation, at the very least, and now he has been reduced to grasping for outlets for thiscompetitive rage,” Thompson writes in “Michael Jordan Has Not Left the Building.” “His self-esteem has always been, as he says, ‘tied directly to the game.’ Without it, he feels adrift. ‘Who am I? What am I doing?’?”

By Thompson’s account, Jordan’s model was unsustainable. Beyond deriving outsized satisfaction from the games he won, he had so distanced himself from the sensation of failure that he had no road map for how to react when his post-Bulls career proved rocky. To Dr. Jerry Brodlie, a noted family psychologist in Greenwich, Connecticut, this Jordan was an extreme version of the teenager who thinks he can do no wrong and then struggles mightily once hedoes. “It’s like he’s this golden kid who develops an inflated sense of self,”Brodlie says. “Ultimately, these are the kids who have a really hard time when whatever makes them special is taken away.”

In his celebrated commencement address at Kenyon College in 2005, the late author David Foster Wallace detailed the perils of placing unhealthy value in something as tenuous as money, beauty, or glory. “Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear,” Wallace said.

The point isn’t that you should strive for mediocrity, and heaven help me if my argument is based on the pitfalls of becoming a multimillionaire icon. But both Brodlie and Wallace arrive at the same place: uninterrupted success is a fantasy. The absence of certain humbling elements in our lives makes us more vulnerable in the long run. From there it stands to reason that losing is something not only that we should tolerate but also that we need.

Great life lessons with real world examples
By Amazon Customer
Sam Weinman's book is a great read for pre-teens, teens and adults alike. He uses real world examples of sport stars, celebrities and others who have learned from and prospered after major setbacks. In today's world where kids are rewarded for just showing up, "Win at Losing" does a fantastic job of showing how resilience after being knocked down, is an extremely valuable trait that will serve you over and over again. The book goes one step further in showing how multiple losses can be the necessary steps to a winning result. Truly a great book.

In a culture where winning is everything, this is the book that will change your perspective. By taking us through so many instances where people lost and survived and even found themselves better off for the experience, Weinman opens our eyes. I read this book and then bought a copy for each of my kids, hoping that they will understand the difference between losing and failure and pick up a bit of these people's resilience. Written with smart insights and welcome humor, this is truly a must read.

Another amazing addition to Imposible series
By Tajana
Oh wow, Centurion was awesome, everything I expected and more.
In this book we got Kennedy's story. It starts way in past when Kennedy was young. He meets Carina and they fall in love. We also see how Kennedy and Smith meet. We get to see very young Smith as well, which is really cool. You get to understand connection and relationship between two men. Then story moves to the present time. I don't want to give much away, but Kennedy and Carina are so hot together. This is a must read if you like dominant, protective male characters, beautiful women and happy ever after stories with a lots of hot sex scenes! I enjoyed every word of this book, I could not put it down. Julia Sykes is amazing, talented writer. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that likes to read erotic romance books.
Don't hesitate, go ahead get the book, you won't regret.
Enjoy it!

WAIT FOR IT....AND WAIT FOR IT!!!
By Mile High KINK Book Club
WARNING: DO NOT READ THE TABLE OF CONTENTS TO FULLY ENJOY THIS STORY!!

Carina O’Connor, is a journalist looking for a break. We’re talking no cable and ramen noodles big break. It comes in the form of an expose covering the notorious Pagans Motorcycle Club known for dealing drugs. Immediately, you think MC Romance story right? I’m not so sure. I finished the book and I am still digesting the world of Carina and Kennedy.

With the help of an undercover informant, Smith, Carina finds herself under the protection of FBI Agent Kennedy Carver. Immediately Carina observes he is bossy. When he notices how guilty and ashamed she feels about her irresponsible idea, he offers his help.

His answer: He needs to spank her to absolve her of guilt.
Her answer: “Wait, what do you mean?” Which turns into – “Explain this to me again?” And ends with – “Ok, let’s do it”

The interesting aspect of this story, it takes place in year 2000, long before we knew about Fifty Shades of Grey and the world of KINK. So, If I am reading this book for the first time in 2000, I would be oblivious and fascinated in the subject matter likewise. That’s why I like the story. Too bad its 2016 ~ post Fifty Shades because the subject matter still yanks you immediately as if you have been living under a rock in the last six years.

The story is captivating. Kennedy has been in the World of KINK for years and he has found his perfect submissive. He introduces her into his world and trains her in spanking, discipline, crops, floggers, rope, etc. You know, “the standard”

While I read many BDSM romances, this one is a first for me. It’s a twist between “Boy Meet Girl” and “Second Chance” I like this because the story is naturally introducing and educating BDSM to a newbie with awesome dirty talk and great sex.

By the end of the story, I am crying. Like me, your heart will be soaring with excitement for the two of them to establish a relationship. Immediately, you can’t wait to read their happily ever after.

Oh no, the flogger doesn’t stop here! As characters, Kennedy and Carina will leave you shattering. The story is a standard BDSM romance, but at the end it imprisons you with moments of overwhelming shock. It leaves you with emotions of anguish, anticipation, frustration and exasperation. So you are left, waiting and waiting and waiting, oh and waiting.

The story will take you on an emotional binge ride. Emotions that may leave you agonizing in pain. Get ready for an ugly cry. I know I didn’t expect it. I am in the airport waiting for a flight and I am trying my best to wipe the tears falling. That’s a 5 KINK review in my opinion.

The Yellow Wind: With a New Afterword by the Author, by David Grossman

The Israeli novelist David Grossman's impassioned account of what he observed on the West Bank in early 1987―not only the misery of the Palestinian refugees and their deep-seated hatred of the Israelis but also the cost of occupation for both occupier and occupied―is an intimate and urgent moral report on one of the great tragedies of our time. The Yellow Wind is essential reading for anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of Israel today.

From Publishers Weekly
This stellar, seamlessly translated report records the devastation that two decades of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip has wreaked on Palestinians and Israelis alike. On assignment for an Israeli newsweekly, the 34-year-old Israeli novelist spent seven weeks in the area, and his is one of the most stirring, refreshing voices of moral conscience to emerge from the depths of this political imbroglio. Supporters of right-of-center Israeli policy will surely take umbrage with these timely interviews, but others will marvel at Grossman's deftly intimate penetration of multilayered issues and personalities. Thus, to his own expressed bafflement, the author discovers that an elderly and wise, tale-spinning Palestinian refugee reminds him of his grandmother and her stories about Poland, from which she was expelled. A description of refugees returning to their Israeli village evokes imagery from the biblical book of Ezekiel; the Arabic apocalyptic tale of the hot and terrible yellow wind, which seeks out those who have performed cruel, unjust deeds, and its accompanying yellow dust, becomes a symbol of the suffocating cloud of occupation that hangs above Israel. Laid bare and damned is the intransigence of both Palestinians who refuse to improve their lot or negotiate for peace and lawbreaking Jewish settlers of Gush Emunim. Evenhandedly, Grossman depicts the criminal treatment by Israelis of Palestinian hunger-strikers, the murder of innocent Jews by Arab terrorists, Israeli and Arab profiteers, an Israeli army, at once brutal and considerate, that puts an Arab town under curfew but stations soldiers to prevent plundering, and the prejudices that exist between Israeli and West Bank Arabs. Grossman's rich and eloquent call to action is aimed at his fellow Israelis who slumber atop a time bomb, unwilling to acknowledge that their moral and political destinies are intertwined with those of the Palestinians. "The situation is a mint casting human coins with opposite legends imprinted on their two sides. But the contradicting legends do not change the fact that between themfreedom fighter or terrorist; ours or theirscan be found the dark, hidden raw material: a murderer." First serial to the New Yorker; BOMC, QPBC and Reader's Subscription Book Club alternates.

Review

“A brilliant, searing examination of Israel's occupation of the West Bank...beautiful, passionate and profoundly disturbing.” ―Chicago Tribune

“The most honest, soul-searching book yet written by an Israeli--or, for that matter, by a Palestinian--on an agony that neither of them alone can bring to an end.” ―Los Angeles Times

“Even the most cautious readers--and even the most hostile--are bound to learn something about the conflict that they never knew before, something that illuminates the news and the reality that produces it, something that explains what is and may yet be, something deep and achingly, damningly, true.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Invaluable. It should be available alongside the road maps at Ben Gurion Airport, for it is a map of the psychological distances that now separate not only occupier and occupied, but willing from unwilling conquerors.” ―The Wall Street Journal

A very disturbing but important book about the Israeli-Arab conflict
By Israel Drazin
David Grossman is one of the three top Israeli novelists. Each tries to resolve the Israeli-Arab conflict and bring peace. The other two are Amos Oz and A. B. Yehoshua. Grossman wrote his book to show the agony suffered by both sides. The volume is vivid and disturbing. It made Grossman one of the leaders of Israel's left. It caused many Israelis to hate him, hatred that continues today. He still receives threats from fellow Jews. Readers may want to read the excellent analysis of Grossman and his writings in George Packer's article "The Unconsoled," in the September 27, 2010 edition of The New Yorker.

Grossman visited the west bank and listened to men and women, Jewish and Arab, students and teachers, old and young, and reported the bitterness of Israelis and Arabs. He tells how Arabs live, their aspiration, frustrations, bitterness, and rage. He reveals how Arab students are stopped repeatedly from attending school by Israeli soldiers. He reports how Israeli judges judge Arabs and how they are afraid to release Arabs who are obviously innocent lest they appear overly lenient to the Arab people and encourage more violence. He writes of incidences where Israeli soldiers mistreated Arabs, physically and psychologically. He gives examples of how the Israeli presence in the west bank is breeding contempt and hatred.

He recalls the statement of Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz immediately after the 1967 war. Leibowitz said that it is impossible to be occupiers and remain moral. Grossman emphasizes that "today the real enemy is not the Palestinian or the Israeli but the extremist and the fanatic on either side." Yet, these extremists have infected Israelis and Arabs, like a spreading black plague that is savaging the morality and the future of both people.

Grossman describes his meetings with Arabs at a refugee camp on the west bank, the frustrations of the women, and how the men are afraid to talk, afraid of Israelis, spies, and fellow Arabs. The women speak of returning to parts of Israel where their grandparents once lived, land they never saw. Grossman is struck by how the Arabs remind him by their looks, words, aspirations, and actions of Jews that he knows, as well as Jews in ancient and near ancient history.

He cites a scientific study of the dreams of Israeli and Arab children. Seventeen percent of the dreams of the Jewish children had meetings with Arabs; thirty percent of the Arab children dreamed of encounters with Jews. The Jewish children saw the Arabs in their dreams as criminals. The Arab children dreamed of conflicts and battles with the Israelis. "(A)mong some thousand dreams of Jewish and Arab children, there is not one which indicates a longing for peace."

He reports on his visit to a Jewish settlement on the west bank. All of the inhabitants are militants. Some tried to plant bombs and kill Arab leaders, mayors and other politicians. He met with some fifty inhabitants in a room and asked them over and over again, very politely, can you tell me how you think the Arabs feel about you settling in the west bank? They could not answer his question. They refused to consider the feelings of the Arabs. They wanted to discuss their rights. Even a so-called moderate and well-respected rabbi had strong anti-Arab views. Grossman encountered other rabbis in other settlements with similar strong destructive anti-Arab feelings. He tells of psychological studies of the adverse affects of these settlers' attitudes upon them. They want to be pious. They see themselves as following the dictates of Torah. But they are destroying themselves and chances for peace. They are demolishing the goal of Torah. They have set a cancer within their souls.

He tells what an old Arab said about a yellow wind "that will soon come, maybe in his lifetime: the wind will come from the gate of Hell." It will set "the world afire, and people will seek shelter from its heat in the caves and caverns, but even there those it seeks, those who have performed cruel and unjust deeds, there, in the cracks in the boulders, it exterminates them, one by one. After that day, Abu Harb says, the land will be covered with bodies."

The yellow wind is already here.
By Urmuz
Just as relevant today as it was at the time of the first Intifada. Insightful, balanced and sensitive to destinies on both sides of this tragedy. One of the most literary 'reportages' I have read, regardless of subject.
If you think Israel's border should lie east of Amman, this book may not be for you. On the other hand, if you like Amos Oz, you won't regret reading this.

The Yellow Wind
By Gayle H. Dehaan
The Yellow Wind is nonfiction. The title refers to what is described in the book as the wind that comes out of Hell to consume everything in its path. It fits the message of the text. The way the yellow wind from Hell consumes everything in its path, is just like the way the cycle of violence and revenge in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

The introduction runs through some things that have happened after the book was written. Then it goes on to talk about Grossman's meetings with a group of Israel and Palestinian writers.

The book's cover has a picture of a man with angry look on his face with one of his fists raised slightly, as if to strike out at the object of his focus. The fist is set apart from the rest of the picture by black lines. I think it's symbolic of the cultures' focus on their hatred for enemies, that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has turned the people to thoughts of revenge.

The book doesn't really have proper characters. It has characters, but none other than the author really come up more than once. The characters affect the story by living out the cycle of revenge and hate because the reader is meant to see the need to bring it to an end. I think a lot of the characters are easy to empathize with because no one is indifferent to being oppressed and injustice generally offends the moral sensibilities of readers.

Fear, hatred, and the power struggle between the Israelis and Palestinians are big themes in the book. I'd say they help drive home the point I think the book is trying to make. They are very effective. His style is a little odd. At first the events seem a little muddled and disjointed. That might have been because I wasn't used to his style. I think very accessible. Those with strong religious opinions about the things in the book might not find it so, but I think it works for almost anyone who would decide to read the book.

A quote that I think does a good job of capturing the thought of the book, "And the children listen, and are meant, it seems, to patch together some sort of philosophy and system of moral values in which one attempted murder is acceptable and another is not." I think this quote shows that things need to change because the way they are is unacceptable.
The book is set in Israel during 1980's. The author travels around and talks to people about their lives. I think the text reaches the reader easily but that's intended because the real purpose lies in the answer that it seeks.

A minor theme he did a good job was the theme of homeland. He brings it up and shows us that both people groups have very similar values because there are different stories with the different people groups that revolve around a loss of their h

Sustainable Building Design: Learning from nineteenth-century innovations, by Vidar Lerum

A twenty-first century renaissance is emerging in architecture. After a century of building designs characterized by high energy demand, low quality lighting and poor thermal comfort, the fundamental questions must be asked again: is there a better path to designing the most energy efficient, comfortable, functional and beautiful buildings for a sustainable future? While seeking solutions for the future, are there lessons to be learned from the best buildings of the past?

Sustainable Building Design explores outstanding buildings and building designs of the twenty-first century, with an emphasis on the artistry of masters of architecture who came before. By dissecting and analyzing great public buildings of the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, materials, techniques, and methods are discovered. This book presents the reader with clues and suggestions that will reveal the secrets of these buildings and by doing so provides the reader with a thorough understanding of how these architectural masterpieces work.

Using photographs, drawings, sections, plans and diagrams which are painstakingly redrawn for consistency and clarity based on a wide range of documentation, Vidar Lerum compares works of architecture from the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. The reader is presented with a careful analysis of each building, providing a compelling sourcebook of ideas for students and professional architects alike.

Review

'A must-read for architects in practice or education that brings home the sustainable reality of technics of physics that first matured during the 19th Century, a reality that, with electronic assistance, still bears environmental fruit today. Vidar Lerum digs deep to shed light on the performance attributes of landmark buildings now more fully discovered.' - Colin Porteous, Professor of Architectural Science, Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow

‘This book should be compulsory reading for all students of architecture and environmental systems engineering. By means of a unique combination of 19th Century and 21st Century case studies, Vidar Lerum convincingly demonstrates that the techniques often used in contemporary exemplar buildings for the improvement of energy efficiency were first tested in monumental buildings about 150 years ago. The modern case studies provide an incredibly detailed resource of information for all those seriously interested in Sustainable Design.’ - Dr Neil S. Sturrock, Chairman of CIBSE Heritage Group, Senior Lecturer in Building Energy Studies, Liverpool John Moores University (1971-2012)

"The book is beautifully put together with outstandingly good colour photography, clear line drawings and reproductions of original design drawings." – Peter Swallow, Building Engineer
