About the Author

Courttia Newland is the author of seven works of fiction. His latest, The Gospel According to Cane, was published in 2013 and has been optioned by Cowboy Films as TV Serial for the BBC. He was nominated for the Impac Dublin Literary Award and The Frank O' Conner award, as well as numerous others. His short stories have appeared in many anthologies and broadcast on Radio 4. He is Associate Lecturer in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London, UK, and is completing a PhD in Creative Writing.

Tania Hershman is an award-winning writer of short and very short stories which have been widely published in print and online and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4. Her first collection, The White Road and other Stories (2008) was commended, 2009 Orange Award for New Writers. Her second, My Mother Was An Upright Piano: Fictions (2012), contains 56 very short fictions and was longlisted for the 2012 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. Tania is founding editor of The Short Review, curator-in-chief of UK & Ireland short story hub ShortStops, and regularly teaches workshops on short fiction and using science as inspiration. Love at Second Sight

I went through quite a process with this book. I am a published novelist who had never written a short story. I wanted to give it a try, and this was the first book on writing short stories I picked up. While I found the initial chapters on the history of the short story and its celebration as an art form interesting, I found myself irritated by their repetitiveness and a certain preciousness in what I experienced as rather over-the-top preaching to the choir, to those already enamored of short stories, eulogizing this form of expression. I seriously considered reading no further. I persisted more due to cussed stubbornness than any real hope I would find what I was looking for. Against my expectations, as the book progressed I was rewarded with a steady stream of hard-headed chapters full of practical and clearly-expressed advice about writing. The greatest accolade I can give this book is that I took some notes on the points that impressed me the most, sat down, and ten days after I first opened this book, days in which I had very little time to spare, I was staring at the rough draft of my first short story and notes for two others. Since this is the only book on writing the short story I have read so far, I can't make any comparisons. I can only say that for me the time I spent reading Writing Short Stories was exceedingly well invested.

Entertaining

This wasn't exactly what I expected from the title. I got it as research, and expected it to be boring. What I discovered was the subjects covered (more than aputations) were entertaining and eye opening. A great read.

Funny, entertaining adventure memoir with a message

I stumbled across this book in a little off-the-beaten-path shop in rural Virginia and couldn't resist picking it up because of the title. I bought it after reading a few sample pages, and I'm very glad I did.

Nathan is an Australian who appreciates explosions, fires, and exotic places (hey, who doesn't?). He was a military commando, a civilian security contractor, and a police officer. All interesting enough. But what's most interesting is the fact that he is also a thoughtful humanitarian.

The book consists of about a dozen stories from Nathan's past, told in a wonderfully casual style as though he were across the table with the two of you enjoying a few adult beverages. Plenty of people have done adventurous stuff; few have the ability to write about their adventures in a way that paints a clear picture and also illustrates the author's worldview without being preachy.

The world would be a better place with more people like Nathan Mullins. He's immature enough to want to make things go boom (which often makes a person fun to be around), yet mature enough to understand the importance of perspective and community -- and to recognize that people outside of his immediate culture are part of that community. He knows how to have fun and he can also write well. It's a win-win situation!

Highly recommended!

Regardless of what the title may suggest, this is not a step by step instruction manual on how to amputate a leg. Nathan Mullins, the author, has, as they say, been around. He's been a policeman, a Commando and now an aid worker for Australian Aid International. How to Amputate a Leg is a collection of stories and annecdotes that Nathan has experienced along the way. With some absolutely hilarious recollections (that had me laughing out loud), mixed with some sobering stories, this book makes for great entertainment, with a touch of advice along the way. Oh, and there is one section where he does explain how to amputate a leg in the field, but also warns not to try it at home, because there's always one somewhere out there that will. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and highly recommend it to other readers. Keep your eye out for other books by this author.

A must read...

Research with heart. Rosenholtz shares quality research on what makes elementary schools effective. (I believe that the work can be used for other levels.) In a very readable style, Rosenholtz describes what separates ineffective and effective schools. It is the definition of teaching that is crucial, followed by what a staff does because of that definition. In a nutshell, the level of collegiality among teachers is vital to a school's success. The book balances research with explanation that has a lovely tone of caring and sincerity. I believe it to be an important, relevant book.

About the Author
Since 1978, Anne Hillman has continued to develop and teach a contemporary philosophy of consciousness that can contribute to fundamental changes in individuals and their cultures. She mentors individuals and groups who are serious about deepening a mature spirituality, and her books are opportunities to go beyond existing personal and cultural perspectives--an invitation into a larger embrace. Inspired by Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry during a year of postgraduate study in 1987, Anne's work turned to serving the critical needs of the community of life on Earth, and has focused on the radical transformation required for Homo sapiens to adapt. To that end, she has led experiential learning groups and retreats in the US, Australia, and Canada about the essential inner preparation for the emergent consciousness of Love. Educated at Smith College, Anne was originally a classical musician, choral director, and singer. Widowed early in life with two young children, she was offered one of the first Radcliffe Institute fellowships for part-time graduate study in 1970, and received a master's degree in adult learning and organization development from Boston University.� She worked as a consultant and for twenty years, helped a broad spectrum of organizations tap new levels of group functioning and creativity in times of rapid change. The Dancing Animal Woman--A Celebration of Life was published in 1994, and the first edition of Awakening the Energies of Love--Discovering Fire for the Second Time in 2008, with a completely revised second edition published in 2016. Love is The Mystery

After reading this book, it struck me that some books tell 'about' the Truth and others tell the Truth. 'Awakening the Energies of Love' tells the Truth. The author steps right into it, up to her neck, as it were, and takes us with her. On virtually every page the author takes us into her life--courageously, unabashedly. But while standing this deep in the Truth at times can be discomforting, it never feels like what she reveals is 'too private'. On the contrary, what she describes turns out to be as much ours as it is hers since her words then embrace and caress her experiences, becoming reflections of what those deeply personal experiences mean universally, spiritually. How do we use in our own lives these deep inner Truths she has touched? As intimate and deeply personal as Hillman's writing is, it carries, in beautiful prose and poetry, a universal message about love that is rarely articulated quite so clearly and personally. In her own words, we learn that the love we yearn for, even as we erect barriers against it, is "not something we do. It stands revealed as who we really are. Walls fallen away, we find ourselves in communion with everything--in communion with Being itself--I AM." (p. 331)I suspect I will never finish reading this book, for each time I open it again, usually to a random page, I discover a part I have perhaps understood too quickly and so must read again as if for the first time.

A Remarkable Book

This is a remarkable book: it doesn't take sides. True to her subject of Love, Anne Hillman doesn't make different points of view wrong in order to prove her own. She doesn't speak to just one kind of reader either--not only to Christians or those with New Age perspectives, to Buddhists or agnostics or scientists. Rather than adding to the arguments between all these warring factions, this author includes all of us, so that we may (in her words) "join hands." She honors our differences, then demonstrates how we can develop new skills to bring our conflicts to an end. Whatever your persuasion, be it martial arts or philosophy, religion or cosmology, Anne invites you to join her on a journey into the common denominator of Love. In the first half of the book, "The Known," she'll guide you down into the three "Foundations of the Soul"--your body, heart, and mind--and help you to understand not only your heritage, but also yourself more deeply. In the second half, "The Unknown," she'll take you further than psychology and religion as we usually think of them, beyond what you know through your intellect and your feelings, towards the mysteries of a different kind of Love. You will understand that awakening to such an "unknown" is a rebirth: what her subtitle calls Fire for the Second Time. How can you awaken to this kind of Love in your life? To a Compassion that serves all life on this planet--all of existence? This book will inspire you to answer those questions for yourself. Beautiful story

Tracy did a wonderful job researching the time period and characters to make the reader feel as if present. It lifted Bathsheba out of the Bible and gave her a voice - - and helped me understand her circumstances and experiences that much more. I felt an amazing sense of peace upon completion of this book.
