Throughout this important book, Arthur M. Cohen and Florence B. In this completely revised and updated fifth edition, the authors include the most vital information about changes in the community college environment that have occurred in the past quarter century including: institutional expansion into new areas of service; the changing patterns of student demographics; the differences between full-time and part-time faculty; the challenges faced by college administrators due to inconsistencies in funding; the relationship between tuition and student aid; the changes in instructional technology; modified relationships with the community; the rise of occupational education and the fall in student literacy; stabilization of the liberal arts; assessment of college outcomes and contributions; and what the future holds for community colleges.

Too many judgements. Let's keep textbooks objective
By Marisela Mendoza
It is unfortunate that this book is so popular among instructor's teaching a course on the US community college. The authors' express a bias in their tonality throughout the book. This comes is various forms throughout the book. For example, they insert these little judgmental comments after statements that seemingly they disagree with as if in an attempt to discredit the source. This went way too far for me on page 368 of this edition: They did not see anything wrong with using the word "hagiographers" to describe social science researchers whom presents alternative views to the conception and purpose of the U.S.-American community college. In other words, if a concept, idea, or actual research goes against their views, the authors have no qualms interjecting immature comments. Sure, it is fine to express opposing viewpoints or feelings. But this isn't a blog. This is (suppose to be) a TEXTBOOK. And in case they still haven't received the memo: filling paragraphs with rhetorical questions is quite annoying and fruitless. Please, someone out there write another book on the U.S. American community college system to replace this one.

Carefully arranged topics with excellent supporting examples builds the base of understanding about community colleges
By Jodi Potter
I am working through an independent study course on two-year institutions with a focus on student retention efforts and the employment of adjunct faculty members. The American Community College provides an in depth review of key topics relating to community colleges while providing examples of policies, changes in direction, funding plans, and a look towards the future. Each chapter was organized in an easy to read consistent fashion that allowed a topic to be introduced, dissected, made relevant by supporting research, and a look to continuing issues. The reader will come out of the experience with an understanding on two-year institutions that will allow them to thoughtfully contribute to a round table conversation.
