Decent book but some odd choices

Some of the odd inclusions like 12 pages on the Lord of the Rings or Batman Returns. Many significant films like War of the Worlds, To Kill a Mockingbird aren't present. Still a decent book. Also book loses a star for it's inclusion of full frontal nudity with Clockwork Orange making this a non-family friendly book as well.

Excellent undergraduate text on quantum chemistry

I purchased a softcover copy of this book after seeing preview sections of it online on Google books. An excellent introductory textbook with well thought-out questions that follow each chapter. Easy to understand, and derivation of most equations are nicely executed within the text. I would rank this book equivalent to the classic text on quantum chemistry by Don McQuarrie. If you need something more basic, go for the classic text by A.R. Denaro (A Foundation for Quantum Chemistry); out-of-print, but still available in used bookstores, or online stores. If you need a primer in calculus, then a good place to start is "Teach Yourself Calculus" by Abbott.

fine condition except one chapter

The first chapter of the book is in a condition less than acceptable: it is overdrawn with non-erasable ink and yellow marker and with a lot of handwritten commentary in the margins. However, it is only the first 25 pages, or so. The rest of the book is in excellent condition - excellent as in 'almost not used'. Had I found the book in a physical store, I had probably been able to talk down the price a few $$.

Instead, it was the outgrowth of many thousands of years' worth of experience at manipulating symbols.

In Volume I: From Counting to Cuneiform, Denise Schmandt-Besserat describes how in about 8000 B.C., coinciding with the rise of agriculture, a system of counters, or tokens, appeared in the Near East. These tokens—small, geometrically shaped objects made of clay—represented various units of goods and were used to count and account for them. The token system was a breakthrough in data processing and communication that ultimately led to the invention of writing about 3100 B.C. Through a study of archaeological and epigraphic evidence, Schmandt-Besserat traces how the Sumerian cuneiform script, the first writing system, emerged from a counting device.

In Volume II: A Catalog of Near Eastern Tokens, Schmandt-Besserat presents the primary data on which she bases her theories. These data consist of several thousand tokens, catalogued by country, archaeological site, and token types and subtypes. The information also includes the chronology, stratigraphy, museum ownership, accession or field number, references to previous publications, material, and size of the artifacts. Line drawings and photographs illustrate the various token types.

Mostly data points, few pictures

Denise Schmandt-Basserat's work is great. Her thesis on the origin of writing is fascinating and I highly recommend her book "How Writing Came About".

I was hoping that this book would be a giant color picture book of the tokens she studied, like a museum catalog perhaps. Unfortunately there are only 13 pages of photos (in black and white) and the rest is simply a printed database of the tokens (where they were found, what museum collection they are in, etc).

I'm sure this is very useful to archaeologists who are doing a thorough study of the tokens, so I am glad it is published, but don't bother buying this unless you are doing such a study.

Extremely helpful

I have read many church planting manuals and this is in my top three. I especially appreciated the focus on the Planters family and marriage in particular. If you are considering planting a church this is a resource you definitely want in your toolbelt!

A principle-based approach to church planting that is standing the tests of time

The New Dynamic Church Planting Handbook is published by Dynamic Church Planting International ([...] a non-profit organization with a vision for equipping Christian leaders to plant 5,000,000 churches to win the world for Christ. DCPI gives their training away, responding to training invitations from all over the world. To date DCPI has trained tens of thousands of church planters around the world who have planted an estimated 150,000 new churches.

By the time I first experienced DCPI's approach to church planting, I had already had a part in planting 12 churches, and had received a variety of church planter training in Bible college, seminary, one-on-one from an experienced mentor, and a culture-specific, model-specific institute in Asia. My reaction to this material was "This is the training I wish I could have had when I was planting my first church!" The material rings with the authentic voice of church planters who have experienced the same things I experienced. Church planter instruction can be academic and hard to get a handle on. It can be model-specific and of limited application beyond that model. It can be great for some cultures but not for others. DCPI's material is based on 12 biblical principles. As the authors sought to codify the lessons learned in the course of their church planting experience, they stepped back to ask the question, "Is this lesson something most other church planters can benefit from, or is it just one expression of a broader principle?" In seeking to transcend their specific experiences and make their material principle-based, Becker, Carpenter, and Williams ended up with a practical approach to church planting that in my observation transcends differences due to culture or model. People have used this material to successfully plant mega churches and house churches, in every continent on earth.

This handbook covers most of the material covered in DCPI's Church Planting Essentials training, but goes beyond what the training covers and also provides an appendix of sample lists and forms. (The appendix, unlike most of the book, is more specific to planting seeker churches in North America.) DCPI divides the church planting process into four phases, with a different focus in each phase: God to you, you to the team, the team to the church, and the church to the world. A great feature of this book's approach is that the fourth phase begins when the new church is launched--just as the first year of a baby's life is a crucial time of development that lays a foundation for that baby's long-term viability, so the first year of a new church's life should be planned carefully from the beginning. "Landmarks" are provided for each of the four phases, major tasks that must be completed that provide direction and help measure progress. The book further suggests tasks for each landmark. My experience is that the landmarks are reliably cross-cultural and apply to any church planting model, while the tasks are where great variation enters, dependent on culture and model.

From their first-hand experience planting churches, the authors provide added value in this handbook beyond the how-to's by addressing such things as church planting landmines, leadership development, church planter assessment, the church planter family, and different ways of responding to trials and crises. This handbook is in 8 1/2 x 11 inch format and was published in 2003. Its 32 chapters are divided into five sections: Preparing for the journey, Leading wisely and well, Keeping your family healthy along the way, Reaching people effectively, and Prayerful planning. This is not a book about planting seeker churches or missional churches or cell churches or satellite churches, but rather the principles that must underlay any new church.

If God has called you to plant a church, but you don't know how, this is the book for you. The New Dynamic Church Planting Handbook is my top recommendation for principle-based church planting essentials.

makes me want to cry

This book is so poorly written and wordy it makes me want to cry. I bought it as a requirement for a Proff. Ethics course, however I would not recommend any instructor or person ever try to read this book.
What a poor attempt at writing and editing. I would be ashamed if my name were listed on the cover.
The authors are overly wordy, have bad sentence structure, and often make contradicting statements. I have to wonder how they even graduated highschool.

Too wordy, poorly written and poorly edited. Lots of careless spelling errors and sentence structure errors. The professor talked trash about this book, and was always making apologies for the authors' mistakes. Bottom line, I had to have it for class, but other than that, I wouldn't buy it again.

This book makes my eyes bleed!!! If I could give it zero stars I would. I can't stand reading it and it's repetitive to the point where it makes no sense. I have to read it for a class but if I didn't I wouldn't own it. Didn't buy it on Amazon, I got it for free. Thank God!

I don't like writers that don't do their research!

After the first few pages I quit trying to read this book. The writer did NOT even do basic research for this book, there was no such word as luggage in that time period. I did not wait to find anymore mistakes like that. Yes, I am a history buff and it drives me craze when a writer does not take the time to research the time period they are trying to writing about. If anyone wants to read a good historical book, try Elizabeth Chadwick or Roberta Gellis.

I love this story!

I loved it! This is the first Scottish romance I've read and it has me hooked. The writing is top-notch with just the right amount of suspense. I love the main characters and can't wait to read the next book in the series - ROMANCE: The Highlander's Destiny: A Contemporary Scottish Romance (The Laird's Legacy Book 2).

Underwhelming, Unbelievable, and Perhaps Unfinished

This book was not a trailblazer in the plot department. A young English woman being tossed into an arranged marriage, only to be kidnapped by barbaric Scots...it's a fairly well-known trope. That in itself wouldn't have bothered me, it if had been well done. I don't terribly mind reading familiar plots. When I pick up romantic fiction, what I'm really looking for well-developed characters, believable relationships, and passion. This book failed on all counts.

We'll start with character development. Apparently, this author believes that ONE characteristic is enough of a foundation for the entire person to stand on. Lachlan has a tiny half-smile smirk. Gail has a big, boisterous laugh. That about sums up their characters. They weren't fleshed out enough. The story wasn't long enough, nor did it span enough time to fully realize the characters. Even the protagonist, Elena, seemed utterly generic. I never really got invested in her as a person. Honestly, I think the author was going for a cheap emotional connection by having Elena violently kidnapped and almost raped, hoping that those events alone would be enough to bond the reader to her. And speaking of her attacks...

I don't mind suspending reality for the sake of a story, if we're talking about fantasy elements (dragons, magic, etc.) However, I can't connect to a story that wants me to believe that a woman would fall in love with a man (AFTER ONE DAY) who led the attack that killed all her escorts and kidnapped her. It's just utterly unbelievable to me. Maybe if she had been there a long time and come to truly know these people (not just Lachlan) I could see it. It also bothered me (even struck me as a little...racist?) that all the Scots except for the hunky man were portrayed as barbarians, dirty and stupid and cruel. It didn't sit well with me. Something else completely unbelievable...no one would give a prisoner a weapon and then teach them how to use it! A day after kidnapping her! It's ridiculous. Lachlan had NO reason to believe that she wouldn't stab him at the earliest opportunity.

Finally, I felt this story lacked passion. This probably goes back to the fact that the story literally covers the span of 3 days. I just can't get on board with this romance unfolding so quickly. The two characters needed more time together. It would have been nice to have some chapters from Lachlan's perspective, to see how his feelings for Elena were developing. As far as Elena's passion for Lachlan, I'm sorry, but repeated descriptions of shudders and belly-warmth is not enough for me. There was some hint of passion during their fighting lesson, but it wasn't enough.

This was a quick read, but it still felt like a waste of my time. This feels like a very early rough draft that needs a ton of revision and addition to make it a palatable, enjoyable read.
