Awesome, fast-paced series starter with Templar Knights, magic, and vamps.

Whenever I got word that Debra Dunbar was writing an entirely new series outside of the Imp world, I knew that whatever it was, it would knock my socks off. Dunbar has a way with words, pardon the pun, and the characters she creates are always multi-dimensional, tough but not infallibly so, and the worlds she creates for these characters to inhabit are subtle, yet just as rich as the characters. Aside from all of the above, the biggest draw for me was the fact that this new series would have a Templar as the main character. Yes, you heard right: a mere human. Albeit a human with some magic, but human nonetheless.

In Dead Rising, readers are introduced to Solaria Angelique Ainsworth, a woman descended from centuries of Templar Knights. Up until this point, all of her family members, past and present, have accepted their fate and taken the Oath and its responsibilities without question. The sole exception being Aria herself. Unable to dedicate herself to knighthood for fear of losing who she is, she relocates to Baltimore in hopes of separating herself from her mother's constant Oath nagging, and making a life that's purely her own. Her need to have her own identity is strong, and as such, she's the black sheep of the Ainsworth clan.

Even without taking the Oath, Aria's need to protect and her need to guide the "Pilgrim's on the Path" is just as strong as her need to be recognized as a person and not just a Knight. There's quite a lot of internal struggling within Aria, and it will be interesting to see if she ever succumbs to both her family and the small part inside of her that sees the benefits of becoming a true Templar Knight.

Aside from Templars, Dead Rising also centers around vampires. The Knights and the vampires have a very uneasy truce that dates back centuries; a truce that must be navigated with trepidation. Dunbar's vampires, at their cores, are the monsters we expect when we hear "vampire". Although there are a few sexy ones thrown in for good measure (Hello, Dario :) ). Aria finds herself embroiled in vampire politics, much to her dismay, after being approached by said sexy vampire to decode a strange symbol that's been popping up in various places. With a whole lot of reluctance, Aria works side by side with the unpredictable clan in hopes of preventing death and destruction that ties back to a murder dating 40 years ago.

Dead Rising, in my estimation, is Dunbar's most ambitious urban fantasy to date. There aren't many mainstream UF series that center around Templars, and that element is really what made this story stand out for me. It also has the trademark humor and wit that I expect whenever I read anything by Debra, yet the feel and the tone is definitely more mature than her other series. Not that I'm comparing the two, mind you. Apples and oranges. There's a hint of romance, one that's fraught with danger, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that's going to play out in the future.

Bottom line -- fantastic, fast-paced series starter with murder, magic, vampires, and a whole lot of action. I absolutely recommend Dead Rising and can only hope it's going to be another long-running series. Fingers crossed that it is :)

Couldn't put it down!

I'm a huge fan of Debra Dunbar's writing. I fell in love with her Imp series and have enjoyed everything of hers that I've read so far. I'm happy to say that this book did not disappoint! I'm going to skip the summary, since several others have already done a great job at giving you a general overlook of the book. But I will say that I truly enjoyed this novel, and I'm very glad I'd set aside half the day to read it (took about 5-6 hours, so not a terribly long book) because I couldn't put it down. It's a little different writing style than her other books, but I think any true fan of fantasy or paranormal will enjoy it. You can tell that this is the first of a series, as there is a lot of world building and character introduction, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone better. It's told from the main character's pov, Aria, who is a Templar. I don't know much about Templars, so it was fun getting to know a bit about them. There def are some moral issues brought up that I found to be pretty interesting, and I'm interested to see how those issues play out in the series. I also really liked the main male lead, Dario. He is very complicated, and is not all "good", which I actually like, since I think it's more realistic. There is definitely some sexual tension between the main girl and him, and I'm reeeeeally hoping we'll see something sexy and juicy from them down the road lol. For those that don't like that sort of thing, however, just know that their aren't any love scenes in this book. I didn't see too much cursing either, but, to be honest, I don't always notice cursing. There are some proofing errors that kinda jarred me for a moment when I came across them, but all in all they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. The story is interesting and well done, with like able (or at least understood) "bad guys", and interesting main characters. I'm really looking forward to many more in this series, and am bummed the next one isn't out for 2 more months lol. If it was out right now then I guarantee I'd be reading it and likely staying up all night to finish it lol! All in all, another wonderful book DD! Looking forward to (hopefully!) many more books about Aria to come!

Amazing & officially on my auto-buy list

A quick historical reminder:
The Knights Templar is a religious order that can trace their origins to the First Crusades. They are essentially an elite force with two centuries worth of bloody history. I only mention this because the heroine in this story & her family have been & continue to be Knights Templar. Therefore the history is touched on throughout the story.

She was born to be a knight, however Aria refuses to take the oath. As a result she's a highly trained solider with a history major (specialty middle ages/religious studies) with no job experience & limited social skills...working as a barista.
Dario: Dario is second in command (what amounts to lieutenant) in the Baltimore vampire clan.
Plot:
The Mistress of the local vampire balaj (clan) Leonora request the gift of knowledge (investigate) from Aria. Not everything goes as planned for any of the parties involved being Aria is not a sworn knight, as such her behavior is not limited by The knight's responsibilities or oaths.
Romance:
None.
Dario & Aria have an ongoing "flirtatious" acquaintance. Well, what one may see as provocative advances another may think of as harassment.
Overall Thoughts:
No editing issues. The writing felt more mature than her imp series. The pacing was quick & action filled. I immediately became immersed in the world, plot & characters. I devoured this book in one sitting. The story wrapped up nicely, no cliffhangers or loose threads.
Favorite part of this book:
Aria's character in particular had amazing depth. IMO the templar knight's history along with Aria's facetious humor helped make her multidimensional. Dario & Aria's dialogue was also really entertaining.

Introduction: Eat That Frog

This is a wonderful time to be alive. There have never been more possibilities and opportunities for you to achieve more of your goals than exist today. As perhaps never before in human history, you are actually drowning in options. In fact, there are so many good things that you can do that your ability to decide among them may be the critical determinant of what you accomplish in life.

If you are like most people today, you are overwhelmed with too much to do and too little time. As you struggle to get caught up, new tasks and responsibilities just keep rolling in, like the waves of the ocean. Because of this, you will never be able to do everything you have to do. You will never be caught up. You will always be behind in some of your tasks and responsibilities, and probably in many of them.

The Need to Be Selective

For this reason, and perhaps more than ever before, your ability to select your most important task at each moment, and then to get started on that task and to get it done both quickly and well, will probably have more of an impact on your success than any other quality or skill you can develop.

An average person who develops the habit of setting clear priorities and getting important tasks completed quickly will run circles around a genius who talks a lot and makes wonderful plans but who gets very little done.

The Truth about Frogs

Mark Twain once said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long.

Your “frog” is your biggest, most important task, the one you are most likely to procrastinate on if you don't do something about it. It is also the one task that can have the greatest positive impact on your life and results at the moment.

The first rule of frog eating is this:
If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.

This is another way of saying that if you have two important tasks before you, start with the biggest, hardest, and most important task first. Discipline yourself to begin immediately and then to persist until the task is complete before you go on to something else.

Think of this as a test. Treat it like a personal challenge. Resist the temptation to start with the easier task. Continually remind yourself that one of the most important decisions you make each day is what you will do immediately and what you will do later, if you do it at all.

The second rule of frog eating is this:
If you have to eat a live frog at all, it doesn't pay to sit and look at it for very long.

The key to reaching high levels of performance and productivity is to develop the lifelong habit of tackling your major task first thing each morning. You must develop the routine of “eating your frog” before you do anything else and without taking too much time to think about it.

Take Action Immediately

In study after study of men and women who get paid more and promoted faster, the quality of “action orientation” stands out as the most observable and consistent behavior they demonstrate in everything they do. Successful, effective people are those who launch directly into their major tasks and then discipline themselves to work steadily and single-mindedly until those tasks are complete.

In our world, and especially in our business world, you are paid and promoted for getting specific, measurable results. You are paid for making a valuable contribution and especially for making the most important contribution that is expected of you.

“Failure to execute” is one of the biggest problems in organizations today. Many people confuse activity with accomplishment. They talk continually, hold endless meetings, and make wonderful plans, but in the final analysis, no one does the job and gets the results required.

Develop the Habits of Success

Your success in life and work will be determined by the kinds of habits that you develop over time. The habit of setting priorities, overcoming procrastination, and getting on with your most important task is a mental and physical skill. As such, this habit is learnable through practice and repetition, over and over again, until it locks into your subconscious mind and becomes a permanent part of your behavior. Once it becomes a habit, it becomes both automatic and easy to do.

This habit of starting and completing important tasks has an immediate and continuous payoff. You are designed mentally and emotionally in such a way that task completion gives you a positive feeling. It makes you happy. It makes you feel like a winner.

Whenever you complete a task of any size or importance, you feel a surge of energy, enthusiasm, and self-esteem. The more important the completed task, the happier, more confident, and more powerful you feel about yourself and your world.

The completion of an important task triggers the release of endorphins in your brain. These endorphins give you a natural “high.” The endorphin rush that follows successful completion of any task makes you feel more positive, personable, creative, and confident.

Develop a Positive Addiction

Here is one of the most important of the so-called secrets of success. You can actually develop a “positive addiction” to endorphins and to the feeling of enhanced clarity, confidence, and competence that they trigger. When you develop this addiction, you will, at an unconscious level, begin to organize your life in such a way that you are continually starting and completing ever more important tasks and projects. You will actually become addicted, in a very positive sense, to success and contribution.

One of the keys to your living a wonderful life, having a successful career, and feeling terrific about yourself is to develop the habit of starting and finishing important jobs. When you do, this behavior will take on a power of its own and you'll find it easier to complete important tasks than not to complete them.

No Shortcuts

You remember the story of the man who stops a musician on a street in New York and asks how he can get to Carnegie Hall. The musician replies, “Practice, man, practice.”

Practice is the key to mastering any skill. Fortunately, your mind is like a muscle. It grows stronger and more capable with use. With practice, you can learn any behavior or develop any habit that you consider either desirable or necessary.

The Three Ds of New Habit Formation

You need three key qualities to develop the habits of focus and concentration, which are all learnable. They are decision, discipline, and determination.

First, make a decision to develop the habit of task completion. Second, discipline yourself to practice the principles you are about to learn over and over until they become automatic. And third, back everything you do with determination until the habit is locked in and becomes a permanent part of your personality.

Visualize Yourself as You Want to Be

There is a special way that you can accelerate your progress toward becoming the highly productive, effective, efficient person that you want to be. It consists of your thinking continually about the rewards and benefits of being an action-oriented, fast-moving, and focused person. See yourself as the kind of person who gets important jobs done quickly and well on a consistent basis.

Your mental picture of yourself has a powerful effect on your behavior. Visualize yourself as the person you intend to be in the future. Your self-image, the way you see yourself on the inside, largely determines your performance on the outside. All improvements in your outer life begin with improvements on the inside, in your mental pictures.

You have a virtually unlimited ability to learn and develop new skills, habits, and abilities. When you train yourself, through repetition and practice, to overcome procrastination and get your most important tasks completed quickly, you will move yourself onto the fast track in your life and career and step on the accelerator.

Solid Coverage of Fundamental Principles

This book is much more about "best practices" for productivity vs overcoming procrastination. ("The Now Habit" by Niel Fiore is a much better resource on understanding and overcoming procrastination.) Nonetheless, "Eat That Frog" is a timeless collection of useful productivity tips.

It's a quick read on fundamental principles of time-management. Clearly laid-out for quick reading and reference. As a professional guru on "productivity," I didn't learn anything new, but I enjoyed the stories, metaphors, and analogies used to make important points. I also believe in reviewing solid principles frequently.

I would recommend this book to young and seasoned professionals who are looking to make the best use of their time and energy.

Just EAT it!

In Eat that Frog, Tracy takes the concept for his book from the famous quote of Mark Twain, which is: "Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day."

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

The whole idea is If we can eat the "task" or "goal" we have always wanted to achieve right in the morning, then the rest of the day will be smooth. Tracy helps you to discover what is really what you wanting to accomplish, how to get rid of hinderances, and to do the thing you have always wanted to do. The book is broken down into 21 chapters, that are extremely applicable and life changing if we really put them into practice. Reading the book on it's own won't change you. You have to take the initiative to eat your frog. The crazy thing is that this book is about procrastination, but has a lot of powerful truths that are about leadership. I think that's why I enjoyed this book so much. It didn't just target my love to achieve goals, but my heart to be a good leader who won't just sit around and do nothing.

This is really hard for me to do, but here are just 3 quotes that impacted me:

Chapter 2 - Consider the Consequences: "Successful people are those who are willing to delay gratification and make sacrifices in the short term so that they can enjoy far greater rewards in the long-term"

Chapter 9 - Prepare Thoroughly Before You Begin: "The biggest enemies we have to overcome on the road to success are not a lack of ability and a lack of opportunity but fears of failure and rejection and the doubts that they trigger. The only way to overcome your fears is "to do the thing you fear," as Emerson wrote "and the death of fear is certain."

Chapter 16 - Motivate Yourself To Action: "Most of your emotions, positive or negative, are determined by how you talk to yourself on a minute-to-minute basis. It is not what happens to you but the way you interpret the things that are happening to you that determines how you feel. Your version of events largely determines whether these events motivate or de-motivate you, whether they were energized or de-energize you."

So, if you are looking for a book that will give you a good kick of motivation, with tons of practical tools. I highly recommend Eat That Frog!

Seems Over-rated but an ok read, skip if you've read GTD or 4HWW

This book is OK...

It contains what I think is generally good advice regarding time management.

My main issue is that I've read a lot of the very specific advice before in Getting Things Done by David Allen, and 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss.

If you've read both of those books, there is really no reason to read this one. In fact I'd recommend reading both of those instead, because they cover everything in this and more.

What's covered in this books is in a nutshell:

-a RELENTLESS focus on the MOST IMPORTANT tasks over the less important. The author reminds you that you will NEVER be caught up with everything you have to do, and the average person has somewhere between 110%-140% of what they can actually handle on their plate. Getting caught up is should not be the goal, rather honing in on the 3 MOST IMPORTANT tasks of 20, and making sure those get done even though they are the hardest, most complicated, time consuming, boring, etc. is a major key to success.

-Pareto Principle a.k.a 80/20 rule.

-Make lists of everything you need to do.

-Learn to plan and identify NEXT ACTIONS in advance. He recommends a daily / weekly / monthly split, but I think there are better ways to go about this.

-Pick the hardest, but most important and meaningful tasks first.

-Don't let setbacks phase you. observe them, observe your feelings, acknowledge them, but continue.

One other comment about the book, the font must be 20 pt, very large, and it's a short book at only 120 pages. It took my only about 2-3 hours to read. I subtract points for this, b/c although some great books can be short - in the particular style that the author writes, you won't find deep meaning or context in his message.

He may tell you to pick the hardest, most important task first for example, but without a well-written anecdote, or interesting statistic, it's more difficult to fully contextualize his advice and some of it gets lost.

Overall, good advice, but I've read most of it before in the two aforementioned books. Had I not read Gettings Things Done or 4 Hour Work Week, I would have probably given this a 3.5 / 4.

An ok read, doesn't take too long, but I'd recommend GTD and 4HWW over this.

About the Author
Joel Adams, a Professor of Computer Science at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has taught undergraduate computer science since 1984. He spends each July directing the Imaginary Worlds Camp, an animation camp for middle and high school students. Professor Adams is an ACM Distinguished Educator and a two-time Fulbright Scholar; he spent the Fall 2005 semester at Carnegie Mellon as a member of the Alice team.

Horrible and riddled with typos

Horrible and riddled with typos. It took thirty minutes with my classmates on a lesson to figure out what was wrong with our coding when we realized the code itself had a typo. Any class that recommends this horribly constructed book with the horribly constructed program should be avoided at all costs. Not worth the time and effort I had to put into struggling with decoding what the book itself was saying.

Computer Science major....hate this book!

Horrible book!!!! I had to buy this for my intro to programming course in college. If you are not being told to buy this by a professor, do NOT buy it. Even if it's your textbook for a class, expect it to be of no help. You will be on Youtube watching demos and struggling to understand Java assignments. Meanwhile this book is a waste of money and teaches you nothing about OOP concepts. Good luck.

Completely worthless when trying to learn Java.

This is the most useless textbook I have ever had the misfortune of having a class based around. Alice 3 is glitches at best and the book spends no time explaining java, only Alice. It is a complete joke and should be banned from academia.

Burning Vision unmasks both the great lies of the imperialist power-elite (telling the miners they are digging for a substance to “cure cancer” while secretly using it to build the atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki); and the seemingly small rationalizations and accommodations people of all cultures construct to make their personal circumstances yield the greatest benefit to themselves for the least amount of effort or change on their part. It is also a scathing attack on the “public apology” as yet another mask, as a manipulative device, which always seeks to conceal the maintenance and furtherance of the self-interest of its wearer.

Clements’s powerful visual sets and soundscapes contain curtains of flames which at times assume the bodies of a chorus passing its remote judgment, devoid of both pity and fear, on the action: a merciless indictment of the cross-cultural, buried worm of avarice and self-interest hidden within the terrorism of the push to “go with the times,” to accept the iconography of a reality defined, contextualized and illuminated by others.

Marie Clements writes, or, perhaps more accurately, composes, with an urbane, incisive and sophisticated intellect deeply rooted in the particulars of her place, time and history.

How to design and create an educational course

This book covers all the elements needed to create and design learning courses for adults. It is very detailed and academic in its writing style and structure. I would have preferred a more casual writing style. However the content and process is here whether you want to design an e-course, personal interest course, or a work shop. The books shows how to take a student through the complete process of learning a subject from start to finish, I believe this could even be used in colleges and tech schools for course design and implementation. Not an easy read but well worth the effort.

Creating Courses for Adults, curriculum prerequisite

As a former successful adult education instructor for a variety of writing courses, I enthusiastically awaited for the arrival of Creating Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair. I felt this book would help me brush up on my skills to re-enter the classroom arena.

Once the book arrived, admittedly, I found it difficult to read through what I found to be someone dry, textbook-like material. The trick was, once I pushed through the drab text, I discovered a hodgepodge of practical information. In essence, Professor St. Clair offers a comprehensive perspective into the world of adult education and addresses nearly everything you need to navigate your way to success.

One thing I beg to differ with is when the author writes, "One influential factor is the educator's own educational experience. Somebody who did well at school when she was young, tended to be friendly with teachers, and enjoyed reading and writing will have a particular view of teaching and learning. An educator who disliked school, was uncomfortable with the authority of teachers, and hated sitting still at a desk will have a very different perspective."

I, for one, had far too many teachers who were self-indulged, incompetent, bias and really should not have been training show dogs, let alone children. Granted this was many moons ago in affluent Fairfield, Connecticut, but if you didn't conform to the preppy look, didn't excel in academics or sports, these teachers wouldn't give you the time of day. Not only did they flunk teaching, they perpetuated bullying in the classroom--which is another story.

Despite these teacher's inadequate methods of teaching, I, with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, virtually taught myself everything. I feel I am an exceptional teacher because I had a less than optimal learning environment and was determined to break out and be successful regardless of the opinions that my negative, limiting-belief teachers had about me.

Now, back to the rest of the book, here is what I found:

THUMBS UP:
1. Comprehensive information. You get a systematic approach, based on myriad areas of studies, to help you make your classroom rock.

2. The book is easy-to-follow and well-organized; information practical enough to be applied in a classroom setting.
The main crux addresses a three-core design for effective learning:
* Instructor factors
* Learner factors
* Context factors

3. Whether you are teaching personal development courses or professional development workshops, this book is for you since it stretches across a broad range of channels.

4. Rock solid research. Theory after theory, study after study, I'm quite sure Professor St. Clair had to give up many, if not all, extracurricular activities to write this impressive reference guide.
It is a remarkable accomplishment--even for someone in academia.

5. I paid special attention to the analogies since they are interesting and enhance the book as a whole and added some needed life into its pages (see #1 below under THUMBS DOWN).

THUMBS DOWN:
1. Again, the setback is the dry, textbook-like feel of this book. This is not the case in the entire book, but in the few sections that this problem arises, it does deter from the book's overall quality.

2. Typos. Gosh, the proof reader was not consistent in catching a few grammar gremlins.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:
If you are in the profession of teaching adults, you should know exactly where to find Creat-ing Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair in your personal library, it's the best reference around. One caveat, though, you can plan, plan, plan, but in the final analysis, at least in my humble opinion, the best teaching environment happens organically and naturally so much so that you are watching the clock hoping it will slow down instead of speed up!

Contains useful schematics for developing both credit and non-credit courses

As a two-year college professor, I've been a fan of Jossey-Bass publications for years. They always put out thoughtful books that contain valuable information, and so I was eager to read this book to see if I could pick up some new ideas. Even though I'll be starting my twenty-second year of teaching this coming fall, I'm always on the lookout for new ideas to incorporate into my classes. I found this new book by Ralf St. Clair (which focuses on teaching both non-credit and credit courses) to be very useful.

As St. Clair states at the beginning of the Preface, "The big idea of this book is that education for adults has to be designed. Whether it's a one-hour class on wine tasting or a four-month language course, there are some key decisions that must be made as the course is crafted." To help achieve those goals, St. Clair breaks things into three core factors: matters that affect you as the educator, matters that affect your students, and matters that affect the course content itself. The central focus is on design since St. Clair believes that good course design helps create dynamic, engaged teachers and students.

To that end, St. Clair provides a Program Design Chart to help you build your course from the ground up, depending on your aims, methodologies, and values. He asks you to give careful attention to how each of these areas will impact your students.

Before purchasing this book, you'll also want to be open to using active learning, collaboration, and principles of student self-responsibility in your classes. I already use these methodologies when I teach, but I just wanted to point this out in case you don't.

St. Clair also uses nice analogies throughout the book, as well as good examples from the classroom. The book is also grounded in theory and research.

While a bit dry in places, this is overall a helpful book that asks the educator to reflect on her or his core beliefs and how she or he will bring those into each unique course.
