A quality children's book

This beautifully illustrated book is a delight for Brothers Grimm and Arthur Rackham fans. High quality paper is used throughout so the color plates are presented where they occur in each story, instead of being jammed together in the center. The font is easy to read with ample margins, so the stories can be savored without feeling rushed or the aid of a good light. Well done!

Grimm brothers remain the best fairy tale-tellers ever

This is one of the greatest fairy tale collections ever assembled. At a time when fairy tales and folk tales numbered in the thousands, the Grimms wrote and published a collection of just a few dozen gems, many of which remain classics to this day.

You are likely to have heard about many of these characters and stories. Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, two stories about Snow White, Cinderella, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, the Frog Prince, and the Golden Goose are just some of the more famous ones. To read the stories as they were originally written is a pleasure; to see that they all came from the same two minds is amazing. It would be like the Farrelly brothers directing films that won the Academy Award for best picture for ten years in a row.

It's also very fun to see the differences between these original stories and some of the versions that are floating around in popular culture. If you're thinking of buying a collection of fairy tales for your children, getting the actual stories instead of a sanitized Disney version will expose them to an important body of literature, and can serve as a starting point for many important discussions about the decisions that each character makes.

The book also has many wonderful stories that are less famous, but no less good. My favorites as a child included "The White Snake," which is about a man who eats a white snake and is given the power to talk with the animals; "The Six Servants" and "How Six Traveled Through the World," which each involve a set of servants with extraordinary powers; and "The Water of Life," in which three sons set off to find a magical elixir that can save their father.

There is no substitute for these magical and inventive tales, and this particular edition is extremely well done. There is at least one illustration for nearly every story, including some nicely done color plates that stimulate the imagination without substituting for it. The emphasis is definitely on the words rather than the pictures.

I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike.

I will confess at the outset that I have read only half the book, the first 4 sections. The book states near the beginning “…the field of Hindu Studies is emerging as an exemplary model for religious studies.” Really? Then why aren’t scholars studying other religious traditions taking their clue from the Doniger gang and using the same methodologies? If you are interested in the study of Hinduism as a Western universalism-centric neo-orientalist whose understanding of religion was influenced by a childhood of Judeo-Christian upbringing, then this book is for you. If you are interested in Hinduism as a religion, this book is a pass. As a practicing Hindu of over 40 years, I have never been taught, read, or understood, such fantastic interpretations of Hindu cosmology as I have seen in the article titled Hindu Cosmologies by Angelika Malinar. I would suggest that she study Sayana’s commentary on the Rig Veda for a clearer understanding – with some India pundits, not the so-called Sanskrit scholars of the West. There was one refreshing piece in the book, Hindu Philosophical Traditions by David Peter Lawrence. I found his analysis of the present state of Hindu scholasticism in the West to be enlightening, or rather post-enlightening. For a counter to these neo-orientalists, read Invading the Sacred: An Analysis of Hinduism Studies in America by Krishnan Ramaswamy and others. For an introduction to all Hindu traditions for Western readers read The Spiritual Heritage of India by Swami Prabhavananda.

Excellent framework for EA that is further improved through this book.

The Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture (PEAF) developed by Kevin Lee Smith is a proven and increasingly used very effectively by enterprises across the world. This is the 3rd edition that has many small improvements and also placed within the larger and wider framework for enterprise transformations called POET (Pragmatic Ontology for Enterprise Transformation).
PEAF has many strengths and unique points of differentiation from other Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks. These include the explicit inclusion of organisation culture and its importance for EA, extensive coverage of the importance and impact of change on people from EA efforts, and above it is approachable, relatively simple to understand and extensively proven and increasingly used in organisations across the world. The book captures this and also educates through its use of example, clear descriptions, and explicit coverage of the usual objections and questions asked about EA.
The book would be improved by the use of diagram captions, larger easier to read diagrams and an index to encourage spontaneous usage.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Enterprise Architecture and its use and value within any organisation. It is, as usual for Kevin Smith’s material, thought provoking, even if the extensive use of pastel colours is initially unusual for a book of this type!

Truly Handy Collection Of Great Amercian Documents`

In John Grafton's edited book of great documents of American History, he provides an uniquely handy reference book to the great speeches and documents of our past. Included are both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, with all Amemdments, a document I often find myself in need of referencing, especially in these tumultuous times.
I will not list off all the documents in his book, the Amazon review and several reader reviews do list them. But I would note, that Grafton's commentary on Lincoln's composition of the Gettysburgh Address is in accord with the superb work of Gary Wills in his book, "Lincoln At Gettysburgh" where Wills thoroughly debunks the myth that Lincoln wrote the Address on the back of an envelope on his way up on the train.
Anyone who has frequent need to reference some of the greatest and enduring documents in American History will find this book an invaluable reference tool.

The texts included are as follows: Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech; the Declaration of Independence; the Constitution (with all 27 Amendments); "The Federalist" #10; George Washington's First Inaugural and Farewell Addresses; Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address; the Monroe Doctrine; William Lloyd Garrison's prospectus for "The Liberator," an anti-slavery periodical; Andrew Jackson's 1832 Bank Bill veto; Abraham Lincoln's First and Second Inaugural Addresses; the Emancipation Proclamation; and the Gettysburg Address.
These are critical documents, and it is excellent to have them together in a compact volume. I think the book would have been enhanced, however, with the inclusion of a few texts by women or ethnic minorities: perhaps one of Abigail Adams' insightful letters to her husband, an article from abolitionist David Walker's "Appeal," or an excerpt from the writings of pioneering Native American writer William Apess. Certainly texts like these reflect (to quote from the Introduction) "the ideas, issues, and conflicts which dominated American political life in those first nine decades." Still, this is a fine anthology, and I recommend it both for classroom use and individual reading.

Slim, but Powerful

This is a quick and slim collection of founding American documents. Being small it fits anywhere, on your shelf or in the schoolbag. Get it for Poli. Sci. students, Law Students, and Historians, or for you patriotic friend for the Fourth of July or Patriot Day.
It has the basics that every American needs to know. It has the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, plus speeches form Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, and the Gettysburg Address. You get a good feel for the movers and shakers at this nations founding.
Ignorance is an unpardonable sin. We need to understand the past to understand the present. We need to get back to these ancient and sacred writings to understand our country. They are a trustworthy and reliable source of information about who we are.
There are several omissions. I would have like to have the Mayflower Compact included. The Monroe Doctrine was also missing-terrible shame! I would have also to have the Northwest Ordinance. Furthermore, it would be helpful to have the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution only makes sense in context of the mistakes of the Articles of Confederation. Lastly, I would have included more from the Federalist Papers, such as 1, 2,13, 14, 55 and 84. But this would have bloated the book, thus loosing it's slim effectiveness.
Maybe they could put all of this in a Volume II.

Southern Secrets

The characters were memorable in this coming of age story. Of course I wanted to shake the mom several times, but I was satisfied with the plot. Teenage girls sometimes have major struggles. Grandparents can save the day!

Delicious Southern Treat!

Bev Marshall's third novel, Hot Fudge Sundae Blues, begins with thirteen year old narrator, Layla Jay faking her own salvation to impress a boy at church.

The novel is a coming-of-age story set in the 1960's, in the small town of Zebulon, Mississippi. Layla Jay lives a quiet life on a farm with her mother, Frieda and her grandparents. Her mother marries Wallace, a so-called man of God who turns out to be phony. Frieda doesn't care whether or not Wallace is religious, as a matter of fact, she prefers it when he goes out drinking and dancing with her since she only married him so she and Layla Jay could move away from the farm. Layla Jay is uncomfortable around Wallace, and rightly so. Their lives together, under one roof, throw Layla Jay's world into a tailspin and when a problem arises, Layla Jay finds herself doing two things: praying and lying. Not always in that order, but always praying and lying. She means well, and we know it. Her mother means well and we are forgiving of her as well.

The first half of the book is filled with problems that seem somewhat disjointed; however the second half deals with the consequences of choices and the complexities of familial love. Layla Jay talks with God every step of the way, but this novel is not about Layla Jay's relationship with God, it isn't even about her relationship with Wallace even though he is the reason for so many of her problems. This novel is about relationships with those we love-for Layla Jay it is about her grandma who longs to see her family saved by Jesus, her best friend June who harbors an aching secret, her relationship with her fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants mother, and her first love, a sweet boy named Jehu.

In Marshall's first two novels, she made us fall in love with her characters. Once again, Marshall makes us fall in love with Layla Jay and Frieda despite their elaborate lies and poor judgment.

Even more, Marshall does what all great story tellers do-she gets you to keep turning the pages. The chapter endings are seamless and filled with questions that force you on to the next chapter, while the tone and pace is strong and steady. The novel is an easy, fairly quick read and the action is not loud. It doesn't have to be. Marshall knows how to pique our curiosity bit by bit without ever insulting our intelligence as readers, and in Hot Fudge Sundae Blues she has done just that.
