Finance for Non-financial Managers Review
By tim rusch
Mr. Siciliano does a great job of explaining very complicated and sometimes dry subject matter in a understandable and easy way. Dare I say he even makes it fun, with his sense of humor too. For example, he uses a hypothetical example throughout the book called the Wonder Widget Company. You might know that the balance sheet contains both assets and liabilities? But at the bottom of the assets is a catchall category called, "cleverly", Other Assets! In another section, in Chapter 12, The Annual Budget, he titled "Tools for Telling the Future: Budgets, Forecasts, Projections, and Tea Leaves"! Of course this is serious subject matter, but Gene Siciliano writes with a flair and whether this is required reading for class or you are looking for an edge in understanding accounting reports, I would highly recommend this book. Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy (Focus on Structural Biology), by Gordon S. Rule, T. Kevin Hitchens

NMR spectroscopy has proven to be a powerful technique to study the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules. Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy is a comprehensive textbook that guides the reader from a basic understanding of the phenomenological properties of magnetic resonance to the application and interpretation of modern multi-dimensional NMR experiments on 15N/13C-labeled proteins. Beginning with elementary quantum mechanics, a set of practical rules is presented and used to describe many commonly employed multi-dimensional, multi-nuclear NMR pulse sequences. A modular analysis of NMR pulse sequence building blocks also provides a basis for understanding and developing novel pulse programs. This text not only covers topics from chemical shift assignment to protein structure refinement, as well as the analysis of protein dynamics and chemical kinetics, but also provides a practical guide to many aspects of modern spectrometer hardware, sample preparation, experimental set-up, and data processing. End of chapter exercises are included to emphasize important concepts. Fundamentals of Protein NMR Spectroscopy not only offer students a systematic, in-depth, understanding of modern NMR spectroscopy and its application to biomolecular systems, but will also be a useful reference for the experienced investigator.

Review

From the reviews:
"I think this may become a very useful addition to the repertoire of books on biomolecular NMR spectroscopy. This text is more complete than the well-known book by Cavanagh et al., in the derivation of theoretical results and at the same time it contains more practical information. It is more up to date compared with the 1996 edition of Cavanagh (for instance by including residual dipolar couplings) and the inclusion of exercises is also an attractive feature."
(Prof. Dr. Rob Kaptein, Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research, The Netherlands)

About the Author

Professor of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.

Professor Rule's research is directed at understanding inter-molecular interactions in biological systems. An understanding of these interactions is required if biological systems are to be comprehended at the molecular level. The combined tools of molecular biology, NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallography are used to provide important information to aid in our understanding of these interactions. Our research efforts have been directed at enzyme-substrate interactions, protein-lipid interactions, antibody-antigen interactions, and protein-nucleic acid interactions

Excellent primer for NMR
By N00b_Kendoist
I'm a complete novice to NMR and this text provides a great introduction to the field with a focus on biological molecules. I've also read parts of Protein NMR Spectroscopy by John Cavanagh and I think Rule's book sets up the stage nicely for the reader to explore further by reading more detailed texts (Cavanagh) on particulars of the field. It's a relatively slim volume and not as intimidating in the mathematical modelling as some of the other books. If you need to understand an NMR phenomenon, read about it in this book first and it'll save you some time in developing an overall picture before looking at pages and pages of derivations in a dusty old book. I have Dr. Rule in part of my classes, I'm a first year grad student, and his amazing teaching ability in the classroom is reflected in the book. Highly recommended to those new to NMR along with Cavanagh's text. I wouldn't leave home without them.

Good for Beginners

Goes great with Cavannaugh or Teng -I would not use this book alone but everything in it was very helpful. Also, it is necessary to have more practical guides on hand.

The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything, by Stephen M.R. Covey

This instant classic shows that establishing trust is “the one thing that changes everything” (Marcus Buckingham, coauthor of Now, Discover Your Strengths) in both business and life.

Trust, says Stephen M.R. Covey, is the very basis of the new global economy, and he shows how trust—and the speed at which it is established with clients, employees, and constituents—is the essential ingredient for any high–performance, successful organization.

For business leaders and public figures in any arena, The Speed of Trust offers an unprecedented and eminently practical look at exactly how trust functions in our every transaction and relationship—from the most personal to the broadest, most indirect interaction—and how to establish trust immediately so that you and your organization can forego the time–killing, bureaucratic check–and–balance processes so often deployed in lieu of actual trust.

From Publishers Weekly
Trust is so integral to our relationships that we often take it for granted, yet in an era marked by business scandals and a desire for accountability this book by leadership expert Covey is a welcome guide to nurturing trust in our professional and personal lives. Drawing on anecdotes and business cases from his years as CEO of the Covey Leadership Center (which was worth $160 million when he orchestrated its 1997 merger with Franklin Quest to form Franklin Covey), the author effectively reminds us that there's plenty of room for improvement on this virtue. Following a touching foreword by father Stephen R. Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and related books), the junior Covey outlines 13 behaviors of trust-inspiring leaders, such as demonstrating respect, creating transparency, righting wrongs, delivering results and practicing accountability. Covey's down-to-earth approach and disarming personal stories go a long way to establish rapport with his reader, though the book's length and occasional lack of focus sometimes obscure its good advice. Could have been written in one third of the pages ....
By heartofshepherd
Trust is not something you can teach like an academic subject, it has to be illustrated by great stories. That Covey did an excellent job. He also gave a couple of specific tangible and pictorial models to frame the thoughts into our heads to take shape, and for that I give a full thumb up.

But, from page of 125 onwards at the Second Wave, I skipped pages very quickly because it was written way too long with way too much quotes and illustrations. Covey kept repeating and kept reminding either with the same or more illustrations. While I agree that the 13 behaviours are all great stuff, I would prefer to do more with less. Maybe 3 to 5 would do the kill. The remaining 200 pages simply did not deliver the punch that the first 100 did.

Content to Keep
By Aaron M. Marcelli
About a year ago I began realizing how important trust is in almost every aspect of life and desired to better understand how I could demonstrate trustworthiness. This book confirmed my realization of the importance of trust as Covey repeatedly underlines the necessity of trust in the “new economy.”

This book was incredibly insightful and full of great content. I read it in about 2 weeks which is what I would recommend since the material is so reliant on the framework Covey creates of 4 Cores, 13 Behaviors Trust Waves, etc. You would always want to have that framework fresh in your mind. There are good visuals (such as a tree and waves) provided that help you remember the structure, but the author continually comes back to these to make all his applications.

Covey stresses how building trust requires both character and competence. He also does a great job taking the major teachings of the book and mixing up the applications between personal and professional scenarios. Anyone who wants to have the trust of others wants that to be true in every aspect (and relationship) of their life, so I’m glad this book does not just focus on the business scene.

Beyond the visuals, the book occasionally provides self-assessments where the reader can judge their own grasp of what is being taught. The book very much calls the reader to take action, conveying that information alone does not make someone more trustworthy.

The content of this book was solid and was written with great mastery. I would say the book is heavy on content and theory and leaves the reader to determine a game plan on their own. Along with that, the content also only focuses on building trust based on who you are and what you do. Have you ever met someone who based on simply the way they look or carry themselves you unexplainably think of them as untrustworthy? If so, there’s nothing in this book to help you. Again, the content is great, but applying it requires others watch you and your work for an extended period of time. There wasn’t really much for someone looking to build a first impression of trust.

I recommend the book. I recommend you read it, highlight and underline, and then keep it somewhere to be referred to later. There is simply too much good content to read over once and never come back to.

The Hidden Variable in the Formula of Success!
By O. Halabieh
Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "In fact, both my personal life and my work as a business practitioner over the past 20 years have convinced me that there is a lot we can do about it. We can increase trust--much faster than we might think--and doing so will have a huge impact, both in the quality of our lives and in the results we're able to achieve."

2- "Simply put, trust means confidence. The opposite of trust--distrust-- is suspicion. When you trust people, you have confidence in them. When you distrust people, you are suspicious of them--of their integrity, their agenda, their capabilities, or their track record. It We have all had experiences that validate the difference between relationships that are built on trust and those that are not. These experiences clearly tell us the difference is not small; it is dramatic."

3- "Here's a simple formula that will enable you to take trust from an intangible and unquantifiable variable to an indispensable factor that is both tangible and quantifiable. The formula is based on this critical insight: Trust always affects two outcomes--speed and cost. When trust goes down, speed will also go down and costs will go up. When trust goes up, speed will also go up and costs will go down."

4- "Whether it's high or low, trust is the "hidden variable" in the formula for organizational success. The traditional business formula says that strategy times execution equals results: But there is a hidden variable to this formula. Trust--either the low trust tax, which discounts the output, or the high-trust dividend which multiplies it."

5- "THE 5 WAVES OF TRUST: The first wave, Self Trust, deals with, the confidence we have in ourselves--in our ability to set and achieve goals, to keep commitments, to walk our talk--and also with our ability to inspire trust in others...The second wave, Relationship Trust, is about how to establish and increase the "trust accounts" we have with others. The key principle underlying this wave is consistent behavior...The third wave, Organizational Trust, deals with how leaders can generate trust in all kinds of organizations, including businesses, not-for-profit organizations, government entities, educational institutions, and families, as well as in teams and other microunits within organizations...The fourth wave. Market Trust, is the level at which almost everyone clearly understands the impact of trust. The underlying principle behind this wave is reputation...The fifth wave. Societal Trust, is about creating value for others and for society at large. The principle underlying this wave is contribution."

6- "The purpose of this book is to enable you to see, speak, and behave in ways that establish trust, and all three dimensions are vital...Clearly, these three dimensions are interdependent, and whenever you effect a change in one dimension, you effect a change in all three."

7- "As my lawyer friends affirm, it basically boils down to these four issues; your integrity, your intent, your capabilities, and your results. You credibility--as an expert witness, as a person, as a leader, as a family, as an organization--depends on these four factors."

8- "For most people, integrity means honesty. Though some don't consciously realize it, honesty includes not only telling the truth, but also leaving the right impression. It's possible to tell the truth, but leave the wrong impression, and that's not being honest."

The Fall of the Roman Empire: The Military Explanation, by Arther Ferrill

What caused the fall of Rome? Since Gibbon's day scholars have hotly debated the question and come up with answers ranging from blood poisoning to rampant immortality. In recent years, however, the most likely explanation has been neglected: was it not above all else a military collapse? Professor Ferrill believes it was, and put forth his case in this provocative book.

An Unconvincing Thesis
By Tim O'Neill
On the whole Ferrill's book is a useful resource as a summary of the major events in the collapse of the Western Empire, but the central thesis of Ferrill's work and his final conclusion are both very weak. Ferrill dismisses the longer term economic and administrative failings of the Western Empire, but does so without actually discussing them. He says that to see the later Empire "as a troubled giant .... a decaying Empire .... is to miss the point." (p.164) but he doesn't explain why. In fact, the long term problems of inflation, a declining population and a shrinking tax base, along with a widening gap between rich and poor in the West and a spiraling trend towards ruralisation of the population all combined and accelerated slowly over a long period between the reign of Diocletian and 476 AD.

What we conspicuously don't see in this period is any major military defeats of the Roman army by barbarian invaders. When the weakening, fragmenting and economically aenemic Western Empire is confronted by a military threat in this period it usually defeats it - at least for as long as the failing economy and collapsing administration is still able to organise armed resistance.

The fall of the West was an economic and administrative failing - battles and tactics had virtually nothing to do with it.

But Ferrill simply dismisses all this as "missing the point" without a word of explanation as to why all these highly significant factors are completely irrelevant. He simply tells us they are - end of story.

He writes:

"Many historians have argued .... that the fall of Rome was not primarily a military phenomenon. In fact, it was exactly that. After 410 the emperor in the West could no longer project military power to the frontiers."

(p. 164)

This is quite true, but what Ferrill skips lightly over is the reason for this - the depopulated and cash-strapped Western Empire, having fought five civil wars in the last century and wracked by political instability, was simply in no position to field the armies it needed to protect the border provinces. It's not as though outdated Roman armies were being tackled and beaten by superior barbarian forces. The armies weren't withdrawing after being routed on battlefields by overwhelming or tactically superior Germanic troops. The Empire simply couldn't maintain its centralised military infrastructure any more because it didn't have the manpower or the cash to do so.

Ferrill acknowledges that this so-called "military" collapse, strangely enough, didn't actually involved many battles or any major defeats, but he's not deterred:

"One need not produce a string of decisive battles in order to demonstrate a military collapse. The shrinkage of the imperial frontiers from 410 to 440 was directly as a result of military conquests by barbarian forces."

(p. 164)

Though these "military conquests by barbarian forces" occurred, strangely enough, without any decisive battles. The truth is the barbarians moved, usually without major opposition, into areas that the dwindling and economically starved Roman army had already abandoned or which it could no longer defend in strength. Their "invasions" - actually very small in number - were a symptom of the decline of the Roman army and the economic and administrative decline of the West, not its cause.

Ferrill asserts otherwise, with great boldness. But, again, he doesn't tell us why - he just tell us.

"To be sure, the loss of strategic resources, money, material and manpower compounded the mere loss of territory and made military defence of the rest of the Empire even more difficult. It is simply perverse, however, to argue that Rome's strategic problems in the 440s, 50s and 60s were primarily the result of financial and political difficulties or of long term trends such as depopulation."

(pp. 164-65)

Why is this quite reasonable and sensible conclusion "simply perverse"? Ferrill doesn't tell us, he just says it is.

He goes on to argue that any explanation of the fall of the West has to take into account the survival of the East - which is very true - and seems to believe that this is an argument against the "simply perverse" idea that systemic and economic problems were the real causes. In fact, the East always had a far greater population and a massive concentration of the whole Empire's wealth. The division of 395 made this disparity worse, giving the West more to defend and far less resources with which to do it. Further weakened by civil wars, local warlords and a string of weak or shortsighted rulers, it's actually amazing the West struggled on for as long as it did. So it's very clear why the East survived while the West fell.

Ferrill continually acknowledges key points in the real reasons for the fall of the West without acknowledging (or grasping) their significance. In discussing what the West did wrong while the East got right, he says the East "was better able to afford the heavy subsidies barbarian leaders demanded in the years after Adrianople" (p 166). But he fails to see why this is the case - because the East was far wealthier than the West. This was not a military factor, and it certainly had nothing to do with equipment, training or tactics - it purely economic. The East was able to pay Attila off for years and then, when he became too much of a nuisance, refuse to pay him anymore. The Hunnic king then decided to make up for his lost revenue by attacking the West, since the more impoverished half of the Empire made an easier target than the still relatively rich and strong East.

Similarly, the East were able to pay off and deflect a succession of potential barbarian problems, usually getting them to afflict the increasingly weak and fragmented West. Ferrill briefly acknowledges the East's significant economic strength, but then ignores it to pursue his ghostly theory of military explanations.

Without giving any good reasons for setting aside significant and relevant factors in the decline of the West such as economics and depopulation, Ferrill blithely declares that they can, indeed, be set aside. But not before lumping them in with "race mixture .... lead poisoning and other fashionable theories" (p. 166), which is a pretty shoddy piece of rhetorical trickery.

He goes on to argue that the real reasons for the fall of the West was a deterioration of the Western Roman Army - not the decline in the infratructure and recruitment which sustained the army, as I've argued above, but a decline in the tactics, training and quality of the troops.

For the decline in training he relies almost entirely on Vegetius' problematic manual and on a highly dubious report from Jordanes of a pre-battle speech by Attila about the quality of Roman troops. And for the decline in the quality of the troops he simply points to the "barbarisation" of the army and takes it as given that this meant the troops were therefore of low quality. Again, Hugh Elton shows the flaws in this idea. As he argues, the use of barbarian troops had been going on in the Roman army for centuries and continued in both the East and the West in this period. So why did this practice suddenly cause a decline in quality in the West in the Fifth Century?

Secondly, most of the barbarian troops used in the West weren't part of the regular units anyway - they were federate bands hired for specific campaigns or to defend particular territories. Their use and significance certainly did increase as the Fifth Century progressed, but largely for the very economic and administrative problems that Ferrill is so keen to dismiss. So, once again, we aren't seeing a "military explanation" - we're seeing the result of longer term, systemic economic and social weakness.

Ferrill's final sentence reads: "As the western army became barbarised, it lost its tactical superiority, and Rome fell to the onrush of barbarism". This is nonsense. There was no loss of "tactical superiority" - whenever the ailing Western Empire could field a decent sized army it won hands down. In fact the military history of the fall of the Western Empire is a string of Roman victories and barbarian defeats. It's the economic and administrative history of the West in this period which is the tale of woe and its the weaknesses here which robbed the Empire of its ability to field and maintain those armies and led, eventually, to its economic and administrative fragmentation and its eventual political collapse.

Somewhat enlighting.
By mike esposito
I enjoyed reading Ferrill's work. It was generally well written and easy to understand for a non scholar. Some areas were glossed over; why the Eastern Empire survived in spite of the Eastern army suffering two major defeats-Adrianople and Julian's abortive Persian campaign. I liked his thesis that barbarian armies were not composed of mostly cavalry which is a common misconception. Ferrill does defend the Western emperor Honorius in spite of history's judgement that he was a do nothing emperor and basically ensured the destruction of the west. He does not explain certain key events: namely why the Goths after victory at Adrianople became federoti under Theodosius only to rebel a generation later, culminating with the sack of Rome.
Overall, this work is worth reading for its simple style and essentially correct assessment of the Western Empire's demise.

Accessable yet Authoritive
By Colin F Francis
I found the book refreshingly easy to read and understand, and it certainly kept my attention. For the first time the answer to the question "OK now we know why the Western Empire fell, why did the Eastern last another 1,000 years?"
Simple, the Western armies weren't up to it. It was a military defeat or series of defeats and the nation could not withstand the invasions which followed.
One quibble, probably unfair. There are indications now emerging from tree-rings and global climate indicators as well as historical records, that there was some sort of natural but global catastrophe in the sixth century that helped finish off the Western areas still with some elements of Roman culture eg Britannia. Of course though, the author of this book would not have been aware of those later findings.

The Quiet Man and Other Stories, by Maurice Walsh

In the 1930s, Irish novelist Maurice Walsh placed the moors and mountains of Ireland firmly on the literary map with this celebrated collection of stories. Since then, readers have continued to be charmed by these accounts of the simple and common activities of the characters in 1920s rural Ireland. The lives of Hugh Forbes, Paddy Bawn Enright, Archibald MacDonald, Joan Hyland, and Nuala Kierley intermingle as the themes of nationalism, human dignity, honor, and love are given full play. Made famous by John Ford's Oscar-winning film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, these remain humorous and poignant tales set against a backdrop of intrigue and Irish civil unrest.

Stories of the Irish/English conflict, circa 1920 ring true
By rosebrasch@connectexpress.com
I was happy to find this book republished after years of searching for out-of-print copies. Every story is connected; every story gives a different point of view. Pick up this book and you will become enthralled with the stories of the men and women who lived, loved, and fought during the early years of Ireland's fight for independence. While I realize the book is a work of fiction, I found myself, nevertheless, rooting for each person as he or she struggled with the problems the author put before each of them: alcohol, honesty, familial obligations, moral conscience, the love of country. If you like to read of adventure with your romance(or vice versa), these stories are for you. The cover doesn't do the book justice. The stories are so much more than just John Wayne as "The Quiet Man". At the end of the book I found myself wishing that the author had written another collection of stories continuing the saga of this era and these people.

Lovely stories of Ireland in the 1920's
By A Customer
These tales are told in a manner Irish tales are meant to be told. The lyrical manner and quiet truth of its telling are a rich and delicious read. From the drama of the Black and Tan War to the romance of an Irish summers evening, Maurice Walsh gets straight into your head. Irish wit never underestimates your intelligence, and this book never does either. Hints and fleeting references always come back to haunt you, and the way each of these short stories seamlessly integrate, you will find yourself smiling in admiration. The Quiet Man really captures the flavor of the time, the idealism of the Irish Republic, the heroism of its defense and the realism of hard choices made for that idealism. This is storytelling at its Celtic best, you will not be dissapointed...

aka Green Rushes
By R. Rowan
"The Quiet Man" story first appeared in the 11 February 1933 Saturday Evening Post. John Ford read it that year, and obtained the film rights in 1936.

Author Maurice Walsh had finished four interconnected stories (tentatively titled "Green Rushes") about the IRA and the Black & Tans in 1920s Ireland. He changed names and made minor additions to The Quiet Man to fit it into Green Rushes (Shawn Kelvin became Paddy Bawn Enright, Big Liam O'Grady became Red Will O'Danaher). The current book (minus the Prologue) mirrors Green Rushes, originally published in 1936.

I love the movie, but the book reveals more of the REAL Ireland. Maurice Walsh captures the spirit of the country and her rural folk. His writing transports the reader to Erin with poetic language and unforgettable characters.

For additional history, see "The Complete Guide to the Quiet Man" by Des MacHale. Walsh wrote more about Hugh Forbes in "The Small Dark Man", available used.

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, by Timothy Snyder

"We are rapidly ripening for fascism. This American writer leaves us with no illusions about ourselves."—Svetlana Alexievich, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Vital and Timely
By GM
Breathtaking. Shatters any illusion that democracy is a given in the US or in any country. One detail among the sweeping history Snyder presents: his argument that the evisceration of privacy and the humiliation of the individual is a very old fascist technique. Consider that when you think about the email breaches of the last election, or why doxing is a weapon of choice among the cyber brown shirts. Another: the long and terrible legacy of dismantling the rule and protections of law as "exceptions" -- which quickly become permanent -- due to safety "emergencies." Americans may be tested on that sooner than later. Democracy has and can become totalitarianism in but a few months. The time to stand up for institutions, fair voting, and (this is surprisingly crucial) the ethics of your profession is NOW.

Absolute Must Read
By Amazon Customer
I had seen references to Timothy Snyder's writing, but none of the catalog was about a topic or period of interest. But, I saw that On Tyranny was on pre-order. It seemed interesting. I am so glad I ordered it, and so glad I read it. This book has the information that more of us NEED to read ... right now! Awesome book.

A must read: important, urgent --- and, sadly, necessary
By headbutler
Does Donald Trump mark “the tunnel at the end of the light” — is the United States on the verge of authoritarian rule? We’ve seen this meme on the Web since November 8. In the last few months, it’s become a larger conversation. But in writing by experts? Not to my knowledge.

In November, a piece headlined "Him: his election that November came as a surprise" read like a surprise. Because it sounded like recent history. The rallies. The racism. The conspiracy theories. Only toward the end do you get it — the year is 1933, the subject is Hitler.

A few weeks later, I was rocked by "20 Lessons from the 20th Century on How to Survive in Trump’s America," a Facebook post that had 12,000 “likes” and 15,000 “shares” — such a remarkable response it has been expanded and is now this book.

What was especially disturbing was the byline on both pieces. Timothy Snyder is Housum Professor of History at Yale, author of “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin,” which received a dozen awards and has been translated into 33 languages. In 2015, Snyder published “Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning,” now available in 24 foreign editions. Never has a subtitle been more accurate — or terrifying.

“On Tyranny" may be the most important civics book of the year. It’s certainly the most urgent. As Snyder said in a recent interview, “I think things have tightened up very fast; we have at most a year to defend the republic, perhaps less. What happens in the next few weeks is very important.”

Overwrought? Possibly. But I had relatives in Germany who, in 1933, felt that similar sentiments were overwrought. They “normalized” Hitler. I don’t have those relatives any more. So I called Timothy Snyder..

JESSE KORNBLUTH: Until I read “Bloodlands,” I knew almost nothing about what happened between 1930 and 1945 in Eastern Europe and the western Soviet Union, where Hitler and Stalin killed between 14 to 20 million people. In “Black Earth,” there was a fresh revelation: “Almost all of the Jews killed in the Holocaust lived beyond Germany.” Why were these revelations for me?
TIMOTHY SNYDER: We tend to think about history nationally, so we follow the experiences of German Jews, and once you focus on German national history, it’s hard to see others. I started with Jews and asked: Where were they killed?
JK: Why was the destruction of state institutions the critical factor in mass murder?
TS: Institutions are everything. For Germany to kill Jews, they had to make Jews unconnected to states. In Germany, that was a slow, legal process. So they started elsewhere, in places where for other reasons they destroyed the state.
JK: “Black Earth” suggests that Hitler backed into the Holocaust. He wanted Jews to be sent to Siberia or Madagascar. Why didn’t that happen?
TS: Hitler always wanted a world without Jews. In “Mein Kampf,” he said nature could only be restored by their elimination. He did not know just how this would take place. It was not clear to anyone, even to him, that Germans would shoot millions of Jews face to face. But when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, he gained a practical lesson in how mass murder is done.
JK: For Hitler, failure to conquer the Soviet Union and defeat Britain had to be caused by “enemies.” How did he come to think that and position himself as infallible?
TS: National Socialism fits into the larger Fascist tradition: pay no attention to facts, just follow the leader. Hitler said the Soviet Union would fall in 9 to 12 weeks. When that didn’t happen, he still had to be right, just, as it were, at a higher level. The cause of the defeat had to be the Jews.
JK: In some ways, Germany’s problem in the 1930s was about food shortages. These could have been solved by science — but science was suspect. Goebbels defined the purpose of a war of extermination as “a big breakfast, a big lunch, and a big dinner.” For German citizens, did the Holocaust really come down to this?
TS: It’s not quite that simple, but it’s important to understand that the Germans were living in a material world, and even a country as advanced as Germany had trouble with its food supply. Food was thus a matter of politics. Without a war to colonize Eastern Europe and, in particular, Ukraine for what Hitler called “Lebensraum,” there would have been no Holocaust.
JK: The thesis of “Black Earth” is that the Holocaust is “not only history, but warning.” In “Him” you’re especially scornful of lawyers and judges who submerged their professional ethics “in an
understanding of the greater good.” Why those people in particular?
TS: History doesn’t repeat itself. One person is not another. But the rule of law is a fundamental asset — it precedes democracy, it precedes the free market, everything depends on it. America is a very lawyerly society. Germans also cared a great deal about the rule of law. Yet in Germany, lawyers found ways to reverse the normal understanding of law. After that, anything could be done. So it might make sense for us to think about lawyers.
JK: In your Facebook post, you offer suggestions for good citizenship during the Trump presidency. You start with lessons learned from Nazi Germany: “Do not obey in advance. Defend an institution. Recall professional ethics.” Further down, it gets heavier: “Practice corporeal politics… Make new friends and march with them…. Make eye contact and small talk. This is not just polite. It is a way to stay in touch with your surroundings, break down unnecessary social barriers, and come to understand whom you should and should not trust. If we enter a culture of denunciation, you will want to know the psychological landscape of your daily life.” And then this: “Be as courageous as you can. If none of us is prepared to die for freedom, then all of us will die in unfreedom.” That is terrifying. “Die for freedom” — could it come to that here?
TS: It comes to that all the time. We’re just not used to it, because the exception is America in the last few generations. I don’t mean you should be prepared to throw yourself on the first available fire. I’m saying this: If none of us cares, we’ll all lose everything. Those are lessons from Fascism, Nazism but also Communism in the twentieth century. We have spent the last 25 years forgetting the history that we once thought vital to the preservation of our own institutions, convincing ourselves that our institutions will thrive on their own.
JK: In the last few months, we’ve seen scores of free-lance threats and acts of violence against Muslims. Do you see that as the precursor of an official assault on institutions?
TS: It’s a shot across the bow. Institutions are constantly under attack — they don’t stand up by themselves. What’s new in our country is a president who does not see himself as upholding an institution but as a person whose job is to denigrate institutions. We’re about to find out if all our big American talk about defending freedom is actually true.
JK: As a historian, do you believe that restricting freedom and targeting “enemies” start with an event: the Reichstag fire, for example, or 9/11? If that happens, what’s a useful response?
TS: Hitler used the Reichstag fire to suspend rights and declare a state of emergency that lasted for 12 years. When an event like that happens, It is natural that you experience fear and grief. But you have to understand your feelings can be exploited to undo a political order and resist. The Reichstag fire is a good example of that. A terrible thing, but compared to Nazi Germany….
JK: La Rochefoucauld wrote: “No one can look long at the sun or death.” At the end of 2016, I felt a general lessening of rage, a dull acceptance and dread — and a return to private concerns. Then came the protests. But commitment may wane again.
TS: You can pretend you have a choice. But you don’t have it. What I notice is a new interest in the 1930s among people in their 20s. We told them that history is over, go to work in finance. We were wrong. It’s crucial now how this generation reacts.
JK: Your final chapter addresses the ultimate defenders of decency — “the righteous few.” Who are they?
TS: That small minority who behaved heroically during the holocaust when all was black, when all institutions were destroyed. I worked hard in the Jewish sources to find and understand those rescuers. We tend to think we’re all like that. That’s nave. If government makes institutions go away, people will behave differently and in ways we now find unthinkable. In some future crisis, no doubt a few people will behave well. But we have no idea who they are now. It’s a mistake to count on being rescued. What we have to do is preserve the political order that we have come to take for granted.

Everything you need to know!

Many books on program evaluation focus on complicated techniques, theories, and processes. Phillips' 'Handbook' presents training evaluation in a practical, useful manner. Each chapter clearly presents the whys and hows of training evaluation. He presents the research fundamentals, but also considers the feasibility of many processes used by researchers--offering options to those of us who need evaluation, but work in the 'real-world'. This is by far the best book on evaluation!
