Great way to get your feet wet

I inherited a MakerBot Replicator 2X when I moved into a new classroom space, and this text has been a great way to get my feet wet with the nuts and bolts of getting the most out of the printer without simply relying on designs from Thingverse. There's a lot here that fits with the CMK/MakerEd ethos of being willing to take off the teacher hat and put on a learner hat. The "recipes," while prescriptive, are helpful in making me feel at ease working with an expensive piece of school purchased equipment. I'm glad my school's Director of Libraries got this book, and can see it being a great resource in the year ahead as our middle school's makerspace takes off.

A great guide to 3D printing

The Invent To Learn Guide to 3D Printing in the Classroom was a great overview of the different types of 3D printers, CAD programs and what they are capable of, types of plastics used and why and some great projects to try using the different CAD type programs. I found this very informative and a great launching pad into 3D printing.

I've been interested in learning 3D Printing, from design to production, since I first heard of this new emerging technology. I happened to be browsing Amazon and found this ebook available for free for a limited time so I went ahead and downloaded it. I'm happy I did because now I feel I have a better understanding about the 3D printing process and how simple it can be. The author makes it look easy to do so if I do decide to create my own 3D products in the future based on what I've learned from this book I will feel more comfortable applying that knowledge. The book includes lots of great tips and information that you should be aware of and websites where you can see what other people have created, tools needed, software needed to design your products, as well as how to choose a good 3D printer, if you're looking to purchase one. It is good, not just for the classroom, but for anyone wanting to learn 3D Printing design and production.

Many of the Sophoclean fragments were preserved by quotation in other authors; others, some of considerable size, are known to us from papyri discovered during the past century. Among the lost plays of which we have large fragments, The Searchers shows the god Hermes, soon after his birth, playing an amusing trick on his brother Apollo; Inachus portrays Zeus coming to Argos to seduce Io, the daughter of its king; and Niobe tells how Apollo and his sister Artemis punish Niobe for a slight upon their mother by killing her twelve children. Throughout the volume, as in the extant plays, we see Sophocles drawing his subjects from heroic legend. This is the final volume of Lloyd-Jones's new Loeb Classical Library edition of Sophocles. In volumes I and II he gives a faithful and very skilful translation of the seven surviving plays. Volume I contains Oedipus Tyrannus, Ajax, and Electra. Volume II contains Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, and Philoctetes.

The collected fragments of the lost plays of Sophocles

Only seven of the tragedies of Sophocles survive intact out of a list of 90 plays for which we have titles. All seven of the plays are from the later part of his career, which means that if we had as little of Shakespeare as we had of Sophocles all we would know of the Bard's work would be "Hamlet," "Othello," "King Lear," and "The Winter's Tale." That would still be enough to impress us today, but all we would have of the rest of his work would be titles like "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Julius Caesar" to go with fragments from plays like "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Tempest." But if you have read "Bartlett's Quotations" rather than "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare" then you already know that "fragments" of Shakespeare can still be pretty impressive. It is in anticipation of finding similar gems that we approach this volume of the Loeb Classical Library containing "Fragments" of the work of Sophocles.

Edited and translated by Hugh Lloyd-Jones, "Sophocles: Fragments" is a collection of all of the "major fragments," which range in length from two lines to a substantial part of "The Searchers," a satyr play in which Hermes plays a joke on Apollo. There are also substantial pieces of "Inachas," in which Zeus comes to Argos to seduce the king's daughter Io, and "Niobe," which is the story of Apollo and Artemis slaying the daughters of Niobe for daring to insult their mother. Lloyd-Jones provides what we know about these lost plays to give readers a sense of the possible context for these lines (including other ancient plays and works that touch on the same characters and stories). Most of these fragments come from other ancient authors who were quoting these plays of Sophocles before they were lost, while others have been discovered on papyri in the past century. Most of these fragments are assigned to known plays (10-343), followed by those fragments that have not been assigned to any specific play (344-417), and a doubtful fragment that may or may not be from "Oeneus" (418-22).

Lloyd-Jones also did the translations for the first two Sophocles volumes in the Loeb Classical Library and as is the case with this entire library you have the original Greek text on the left-page and the translation on the right. Certainly it is frustrating to read bits and pieces, trying to connect the dots and imagine what these plays would have been like, and if I had the talent and the time I would love to be able to try and reconstruct some of these tragedies. Once you see how Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides deal with the same story, the murder of Clytemnestra by Orestes because of the happenstance that all three of their plays on that subject have been preserved, it is difficult not to wonder what Sophocles would have done with the story of Prometheus or Iphigenia. Obviously this last Sophocles volume is going to be of interest to only the hard core scholar of Greek tragedy, but given how little there is of the tragic playwrights in the first place, these fragments can be quite interesting.

About the Author

Go for it.

Just got the manual for the Canon T6!/T6s that should have came with my camera. This is my 5th book by this author, I knew from previous experience I would not be disappointed. The book it self is expertly printed with very easy to see fonts and displayed with nearly perfect color pictures. I have been an amateur photographer for 65 years, no longer do we have a hand held light meter nor a hand held split image ranger finder to help with the focusing. Cameras evolve more with every new model and that is why you and I need a book like this, personally Chapter 3 helps with the description of all the controls since most have more than one function. Chapter 5 and auto focus probably done me the most good and since I am new to Wi-Fi this will make life much simpler. Just order your copy, the cost is a drop in the bucket for what we gave for the camera and probably less than a lot of the accessories we have bought and never used. I do not see how you can be disappointed.

A must have for every T6S/T6I Owner. Best of the lot.

This is the defacto book for the Canon T6S and T6I (yes, David explains the differences.)
I upgraded from the Canon T3I and I had purchased Mr. Busch's book on that camera as well.
Unlike the user's manual, this book feels like an old friend with his hand on your shoulder, not only explaining in logical steps and an easy to understand order what each funcion doesn and how and when those functions should be used. And beautiful photos giving you visual feedback of the differences. The personal recommendation boxes gives you tips for accessories, and examples of if and when you might want to get them for your level and style of shooting. The sections about using and setting up wifi, the different autofocus options (totally new for these models] and the lighthanded, intuitive way of explaining not only what a function does but real world feedback of how it will effect your results. This is more than a camera manual and how-to book, this will inspire your creativity and make you a better photographer, and leave you feeling like you were given personal lessons from one of the best intructors available.
One last thought... Since your new camera has wifi, and one of the coolest things you can do is shoot your photos and immediately review them on a tablet
, buy the Kindle edition and load it and the camera manuals on your tablet. If you need to look up an answer on a rarely used function, especially if shooting an unusual scenario away from home, you have Mr. Busch right there in your camera bag to help you out. The kindle edition is a little pricey. But in my opinion. Worth every penny. My galaxy tab s 10.5 tablet comes along on every shoot with me, as essential as spare batteries and SD cards.

If you have this camera you NEED this book!

This is the manual that should come with the camera! David Busch covers every aspect of the camera with useful information for beginners to experienced photographers. The paper book has a great table of contents and index which make this an easy to use reference book. I have one of his ebooks for an earlier model camera... the index has no links or page numbers making it frustratingly impossible to use so prospective purchasers of this in the ebook form may want to beware of that. I bought my camera in September before David's book was published and ordered two other books at that time while waiting for his book... don't waste your money and time, this book has it all.

Excellent advice: clear without being constraining

Excellent advice on how to structure the writing plan from the abstract through to article completion. I found the strategies clear without being constraining. I had originally had doubts but tested their "tiny text" method which takes the abstract into providing a structured table. This structure meant my writing didn't have to occur in one large consecutive block of time. I found I never lost my place in my writing and when life got in the way (as it does- family funeral...) I could come back to the writing space a few days later and i had not lost track of where i was or where i was going. Exceptional good advice, thats easy to follow. My mistake on borrowing the book from friends was in skimming the first section on finding voice, as thats what i needed to put back into the article in its last stage.
My only regret regarding the book is the waiting 16 days for it to reach me (bottom of the planet). Wish the book had a kindle or ebook option.

About the Author

June Payne-Palacio Ph.D., RD

The winner of the California Dietetic Association’s Carol Hayes Torio Award for Excellence in Management Dietetics, June Payne-Palacio has extensive recognition and experience in all areas of management dietetics. She was the Assistant Director of Institutional Administration and Residence Halls at Mills College in Oakland before moving on to commercial foodservice as the commissary manager for Host International at the Honolulu Airport. Next came hospital foodservice management, as she became the Director of Dietary Services at the Straub Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu. She also served as clinical instructor at the University of Hawaii.

After 15 years of dietetic practice and teaching, she returned to academia to complete her doctorate in Institutional Management at Kansas State University. As a consultant with Consulting Nutrition Services, Inc., she assisted with the layout and equipment selection on projects including ten state hospitals, Kaiser Permanente, the Magaram Center at Cal State Northridge, and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Palacio has served as professor at Mills College, Kapi’olani College, University of Hawaii, Kansas State University, California State University at Los Angeles, California State University at Long Beach, and Pepperdine University. In July 2008, she retired after 23 years at Pepperdine University, where she held the Flora Laney Thornton Endowed Chair in Nutritional Science and was the recipient of the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Award.

Monica Theis, M.S., RD

Monica Theis is a senior lecturer at The University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Food Science. She is a registered dietitian and specialist in Food and Food Systems Management. She began her career as an administrative dietitian at The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and spent three years as director of food and nutrition services for a 120-bed long-term care facility before joining the faculty and staff in The Department of Food Science in 1990.

Her primary responsibility is to teach all Food and Nutrition management courses as required for the Dietetics major. This includes Foodservice Operations, a foods lab, and Organization and Management of Food and Nutrition Services. Theis also teaches courses for the Department of Food Science, including Food Law, The Social Side of Food, graduate seminar, and the department’s new initiative to expand international opportunities for undergrads.

In addition to management, she specializes in Food Systems (local to global) including farm-to-school programs and has worked with a number of local schools and healthcare organizations to identify means to implement sustainable practices within available resources. She is involved in a number of initiatives on the UW-Madison campus to support concepts of sustainability in food systems.

If renting is a feasible option, I would recommend it.

I realize almost nobody buys this book by choice. It's a textbook, and you get it because a teacher/professor tells you that you have to. That being said, it isn't one I would have bought if I hadn't needed it for three classes. (If it made ANY financial sense at all, I would've rented and happily returned it!) It's not terribly helpful, and in my experience the index is wrong more often than it's right. The entire book is in black and white, with teal accents. It's a new edition, and feels outdated anyway. (Disclaimer: I may be biased, since this is just one item in a long list of things I don't like about the class I'm taking.)

Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. Less of a read, more of a guide. ...

Less of a read, more of a guide. One that should be read over and over. If you practice the teachings in conjunction with the book, you will find that not only your fighting skills will benefit, but overall awareness, well-being, wisdom, etc. will be enhanced. Just because sword fighting is a lost art form does not mean that it should be studied less or does not apply to many other art forms or forms of combat. My only issue with the book is that it should be longer. However, perhaps that is the point. Since every word has immense substance, and though there are little, every inch should all be taken heavily.

Great translation of an excellent book in a small but well constructed hardback. The addition of various calligraphy and Musashi's The Way of Walking Alone are a welcomed treat that adds further depth to an already remarkable book.

This book:
The Go Rin No Sho (a.k.a. The Book of Five Rings) is the definitive book on Samurai Philosophy by the archetype of The Wandering Samurai himself, Miyamoto Musashi. Throughout his remarkable life, Musashi developed a philosophy and a style all his own. As stated early in the text, his philosophy is not Budhism, nor Taoism nor any other existing philosophy. It is rather a hard won and practical philosophy, almost a code of conduct and a way of viewing the world that is not bound by esoteric nor abstract thinking. Instead, his writing is about a gradual awakening and clarity of thought that his many and varied experiences led him to. Despite being written by a rampant, unwashed and bewilderingly intelligent swordsman with an odd smattering of formal education, his ability to elucidate the intricacies of strategy and apply it to all aspects of life are staggering and surprisingly relevant even now. You do not have to be a fan of Japan, Samurai, the Edo period, eastern philosophy or any other genre you may want to file this book under in order to appreciate it. It is relatively short, easy to read, to the point and like the man himself, deadly accurate. Enjoy the genius that is The Book of Five Rings.

Amazing man!

The Book of Fiver Rings is a very good book and offers excellent advice for people, even today. It's a thrill for me to be able to communicate with a man who's been dead for centuries. By communicate, I mean that I can understand and benefit from his thoughts and experience just as if I had been at a fireside with him. He was an amazing man.
