It's good. Maybe not really great.

There's a lot of good stuff in here. And it's frankly a daunting topic which runs from Linux admin; thru EE; writing code in Python, Java and Arduino's lanuguage; and network admin.

I guess my biggest complaint is the lack of follow thru (this obviously wasn't edited by O'Reilly).

In several places, he assures us that the example code can be downloaded from the "book's companion website" and yet the URL of that site is unavailable. Nor can this site be found via the wide variety of Google search strings I tried. The publisher does not list it on their web site.

The book has no appendices. One helpful appendix might have listed all the parts required for the various projects. Another might have listed URL's and other contact info for the vendors and blogs listed in the text.

It's a good book. I would recommend it. But it's a bit rough around the edges.

More than meets the eye

How hard can it be to lay out a rectangle? With keeper boxes and goal boxes and center circles and 90 degrees at every corner? Actually, pretty hard. And the last thing you want to do is start painting a field and get most of the way done and realize you messed up! Now what?! This book told us how to do it with simple instructions and we made no errors in laying out our fields for the season.We bought this book to help out club not just lay out full size fields, but also sizes for different age groups and small field practices. Very, very useful and very, very worth it. Great stuff.

What a time saver! Our club used to take a whole weekend to lay out our fields for our different leagues. With this book and kit to guide us, we cut that time significantly. With clear cut directions and pictures, this book makes a tedious job a lot easier and quicker. Whoever came up with this idea came up with a winner.

I love the paintings and the easy painterly approach that informs her style.

I remember the first time I saw a URL. It was 1995, I was a teenager, and I was flipping through my hometown newspaper when I spotted a movie ad. At the bottom were the words “Check us out online at www . . .”

I had no idea what “www” meant, but being the nerd I was (and still am), I rushed to my computer. Eagerly, I waited 5 minutes for the spinning disks to boot up and weathered another 10 minutes of crashes and reboots.

Finally, I was able to type the URL into my Internet service provider's search bar, and Prodigy promptly took me nowhere. Instead of a web page, I got an error message.

Not that it would have mattered much.

Let me remind you that 1995 web pages were truly terrible. A look back at websites of yesteryear reveals hard-tonavigate, text-laden walls of words that no one would want to interact with today.

No wonder relatively few offline businesses shifted their resources into building an online presence. It would take years, if not a decade, after the first web browser was born for businesses to realize the importance of that lowly “www.”

Today, having a website is a requirement—it's the modern-day equivalent of hanging a shingle, announcing you are open for business.

The lesson here is that—at first—sweeping industry changes can easily be dismissed. They're often seen as something companies can get to later on, when time allows and budgets free up. But, of course, later on often comes too late and, while laggards are still deciding what to do, their competitors are cashing in.

As of this writing in late 2015, we're just seven years into the mobile revolution as marked by the opening of the Apple App Store in 2008—and yet what an incredibly rapid revolution it has been.

Consider this: whereas most companies just a decade ago lacked even a basic mobile presence, today entire multibillion-dollar enterprises operate only in the mobile space. In fact, many of the biggest players and service providers globally—such as Uber—only exist in mobile.

Like so many did when websites first arrived, small and medium-sized businesses today have ignored or neglected their mobile strategy. However, giving customers a way to do business with you through their mobile devices is fast becoming a necessity, as important as having a presence on the World Wide Web. Just as eagerly as I wanted to get online as a teenager to check out that particular movie's website, your customers want to interact with you through their mobile devices. CNN reported last year that over half of Internet usage comes from mobile devices in the US—a percentage that is significantly higher in other parts of the world where mobile is the only way to access the web.1

In this book, my friend Sophie-Charlotte (SC) Moatti gets you ready for what's to come.

Thought-provoking and fascinating.

If you are expecting a dry tome of code and programming related material, you're not going to get it!

Instead of a tech-heavy litany of specs, we are treated to a real dissection of what makes us humans so attached to our technology and specifically our mobile technology.

The author takes great care to guide us through the reasons we love our mobile devices; the science, yes, but also the art, the psychology, the emotions that the designers of the tech manipulate to "make" us love our devices.

With a broad and deep look at the motivations and reasons, she leads us through such topics as impressionism, freudian psychology, how simplicity and elegance makes us like one mobile site versus another and many other avenues of exploration. A truly fascinating deconstruction of what would seem to be a rather simple topic, becomes an extremely complex and interesting look, not just at technology, but at what it means to be human and how that humanity is "mined" to design the latest and greatest mobile apps.

I am a long-time techie and holder of many US patents and most of my time is spent on the bits and bytes of technology; it was refreshing to read a book where human motivation, emotion and appreciation for art have supplanted the pure "techie" type manual. Thought provoking and fascinating.

Wonderful book. I am not in the IT/tech industry, but I am curious about the mobil phenomenon. This book helped me understand what is going on, why, and where it is taking us. The information is extremely clearly set out and explained, which makes it perfect for a layperson like me. Further, her advice can be applied to all areas, not just mobile. But the brilliance of Moatti is to have added a layer of cultural and historical context so that the reader understands how the mobile revolution is impacting history itself and not just the gadget in our hands. Highly recommended!!

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about "mobile-first" - SC Moatti is a pioneer in this area, with a unique perspective honed over years of trial and error. Not only is mobilized insightful and relevant, it is fun and quick to read - you almost feel like you are having a conversation with an interesting and engaging friend. About the Author
Stewart L. Tubbs is the dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University. He received his doctorate in communication and organizational behavior from the University of Kansas. His master’s degree in communication and his bachelor’s degree in science are from Bowling Green State University. He has completed postdoctoral work in management at Harvard Business School, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. Dr. Tubbs has also taught at General Motors Institute and at Boise State University, where he was chairman of the Management Department and later associate dean of the College of Business. He has been named Outstanding Teacher three times and Outstanding Scholar twice. He has consulted for Fortune 500 companies and is past chairman of the Organizational Communication division of the Academy of Management. He has been named an Outstanding Teacher three times and an Outstanding Scholar twice, has consulted extensively for Fortune 500 companies, and is past chairman of the Organizational Communication division of the Academy of Management. He has also received the outstanding leadership award in London from the Academy of Business Administration and has been inducted into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame by Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Ohio. Dr. Tubbs is the co-author, with Sylvia Moss, of Interpersonal Communication and Human Communication. He is listed in American Men and Women of Science, Contemporary Authors, Directory of American Scholars, the International Who’s Who in Education, and Outstanding Young Men of America.

Exceeds the expectations

The book provides good overview and some more. It is excellent if you are focusing on communication aspects. I find the general management skills part was more intensely discussed in Developing Management Skills by Whetten.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

 

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

NEW looseleaf copy DOES have math lab access !!!!

Great price, much less than the student bookstore ... HOWEVER, my copy DID come with the math lab access !! After reading all the reviews, i also ordered a math lab access, since so many people said that it did not come with one. I ordered a NEW copy of the looseleaf book, perhaps that is why I got the mathlab access ... but if you do need the mathlab, then it is worth ordering the new copy .. because it does come with it !!!

Stick with Thinkwell instead

This book is not put together very well. The equations skip key steps and unless you have a detailed math background, you will scratch your head trying to figure out the missing parts. It is also riddled with errors. For example, in 9.4, you need to take the inverse function to determine the angle of a vector. There is no mention of any inverse in the chapter.

Precalc

My weakest point was precalc this last semester. The book arrived to me in good condition, although it took some time to arrive. The book was in decent condition. There was some writing and a little underlining in pencil, along with wrong answers. This book helped me pass the class. Everything you need to know is in there. I like how this book highlights the new information it is giving you, along with recaps at the end of the chapters.

Buying the book for me was the option as I used it until the last day of class, as well as underlined in pencil some of the things I needed.

Would reccomend this book to anyone who needs to take precalculus
